The last announcement at the latest Nintendo Direct event saw Square Enix officially reveal Octopath Traveler 0. Octopath Traveler 0 will mark the third main entry in the series that popularized the eye-popping HD-2D aesthetic. The original Octopath Traveler was a timed-exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 1, so it's fitting that the latest game was announced at a Nintendo Direct.
Following weeks of rumors and speculation, Nintendo finally confirmed the July 2025 Nintendo Direct. While many fans were excited about the announcement, others were disappointed when it was confirmed to be a Partner Showcase. This meant that the event came and went without much in the way of first-party Nintendo announcements, but it did include some big reveals for third-party Switch 1 and Switch 2 games on the horizon.
Octopath Traveler Studio Teases Three New Games
Fans of the Octopath Traveler series will want to keep a close eye on three new games coming from one of the franchise's development studios.
One of the most surprising announcements was the reveal of Octopath Traveler 0. Positioned as the final announcement at the Nintendo Direct, Octopath Traveler 0 features many of the franchise's most recognizable features, including the aforementioned HD-2D graphics, the Break and Boost battle system, and Path Actions. However, Octopath Traveler 0 will feature a major departure from series norms. Instead of having players take control of existing characters, Octopath Traveler 0 will have players play as a customizable protagonist. Time will tell how fans react to such a big change, but with Octopath Traveler 0 launching December 4, we'll find out later this year.
Octopath Traveler 0 Release Date and Trailer
- December 4
When Octopath Traveler 0 releases on December 4, it will be available for the original Switch as well as the Nintendo Switch 2. Other platforms have yet to be confirmed at the time of this writing, but with Square Enix moving away from console exclusive releases, chances are that Octopath Traveler 0 will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors and be available for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox as well. More information on that front should come to light in the months between now and Octopath Traveler 0's December 4 release date.
Based on what's been shown so far, it's clear that fans of classic-style turn-based RPGs have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Octopath Traveler 0. Stuff like being able to rebuild the protagonist's hometown adds an interesting wrinkle to the established formula, and it will be exciting to see how it all turns out when the latest entry in the Octopath Traveler franchise hits store shelves on December 4, 2025.
