There hasn't been a new South Park video game since the poorly-received Snow Day was released in 2024, but there is some hope on the horizon. The very first South Park video game was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, with eventual ports to PC and PlayStation 1. A first-person shooter game, the original South Park is remembered fondly by some N64 gamers, though it earned mixed to negative reviews at the time of its release.

The original South Park was quickly followed-up by party game Chef's Luv Shack and kart racer South Park Rally before the franchise went on a nine-year video game hiatus. There was then a streak of smaller South Park games like Let's Go Tower Defense Play, Tenorman's Revenge, Pinball, and Phone Destroyer, but fans really enjoyed the big RPGs based on the series.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a turn-based RPG that tells an original story in an open-world version of the titular South Park. The Stick of Truth earned critical acclaim and was followed by a sequel, The Fractured But Whole, in 2017. There hasn't been a new South Park RPG in the eight years since. There was once some hope that Snow Day might help fill that void, but the action-adventure game earned mixed reviews and is generally considered a disappointment compared to Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole. No new South Park video game project has been announced at the time of this writing, but with the THQ Nordic Showcase taking place on August 1, there's a chance an announcement could be happening sooner rather than later.

When is the THQ Nordic Showcase?

  • The THQ Nordic Showcase takes place on Friday, August 1. There is no guarantee that South Park will have a presence at the show, but it has been featured there in the past.

If a new South Park video game is announced at the THQ Nordic Showcase on August 1, one has to wonder what form it will take. A third South Park RPG would no doubt be greatly appreciated by franchise fans, but others may be anxious to see the series tackle other genres. An open world, GTA-style South Park game seems like a no-brainer, but time will tell if that ever happens. There are currently no new South Park video game projects announced, but considering the franchise's enduring popularity, one has to imagine that it's only a matter of time before an announcement is made - even if it doesn't happen at the THQ Nordic Showcase on August 1.

While fans wait for news on a new South Park video game, they can look forward to the long-awaited return of the television series. South Park Season 27 premieres on July 9, so the franchise's triumphant return is right around the corner, regardless if there are any plans in place for new video games.
