A brand-new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game has just been announced, and it is something very few fans could have seen coming, with the title slated to be a VR release. The iconic heroes in a half shell have a rich history with gaming, thanks in no small part to the classic beat 'em ups released at the height of Turtlemania in the early 90s and their later spiritual successors. However, more recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games have started to branch out into other genres.
Last fall saw the PC and Nintendo Switch release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate, a roguelike brawler that was originally launched to critical acclaim on Apple Arcade back in 2023. It would soon be ported to PlayStation systems, with an Xbox release set for June 24. Meanwhile, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown brought the pizza-munching crimefighters into the turn-based strategy genre for a short but enjoyable adventure earlier this month.
Rocket League is Crossing Over With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Rocket League shares details on the newest crossover event coming to the game, which will feature the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Now, a third TMNT game has been revealed, and it will finally put players behind the Turtles’ colorful masks through VR. As reported by IGN, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City is being developed by Cortopia Studios of Gorn 2 fame and published by Beyond Frames Entertainment, and is currently expected to launch on Steam VR and Meta Quest sometime in 2026. A brief trailer for the game shows the brothers being called to action once again, this time through Michelangelo’s eyes from a first-person perspective.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City Transports the Turtles to VR
The Turtles are all about teamwork, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City will support four-player online multiplayer. As is the case with most TMNT video games, each Turtle has their own signature weapon and special abilities, and players will be able to perform quickslot items, one-shot stealth takedowns, midair attacks and dashes, and blocking mechanics to battle the criminal underworld of New York City. The Turtles’ iconic sewer lair will also be fully explorable, including each brother’s personal room.
Tim Waltz, a longtime writer on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IDW comics and one of the scribes behind TMNT: Tactical Takedown, will serve as a narrative consultant for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City. Beyond Frames Entertainment CEO Ace St. Germain says the game’s plot will focus on the familial bond between the Turtles - something that has resonated with fans in the many TMNT cartoons, movies, comics, and games for generations. There is currently no exact release date for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Empire City, but interested players can now wishlist the game on Steam VR and the Meta Quest Store.
