New World: Aeternum will stop receiving new content and major updates, and its servers will likely shut down soon due to Amazon's recent decisions. Initially released in 2021, New World: Aeternum was once considered one of Steam's most prominent MMORPGs, though its recent user reviews haven't been very positive.
At the time of writing, New World: Aeternum is receiving a wave of negative comments on Steam, seemingly due to a review-bombing campaign sparked by recent unfortunate news. Still, this Amazon Games title was once among the most-played games on Steam, reaching an incredible concurrent player peak of over 910,000.

New World: Aeternum Support Is Ending
In an official blog post, the developer of New World: Aeternum announced that the game will no longer receive major updates. "The recently launched Season 10 and Nighthaven update will serve as the final content release for [the game] on PC and console," the announcement reads. According to the post, the servers won't be shut down immediately, and the team plans to give players at least six months' notice before that happens. Still, the tone of the message suggests that the game may soon join the ranks of sunset titles. As for why Amazon Games made such a drastic decision, many fans believe it's tied to Amazon's recent layoffs, which reportedly affected 14,000 employees, including several from its gaming divisions.
Amazon has reportedly increased, or plans to increase, its use of AI across the company, which has allegedly resulted in thousands of job cuts. While there's been no official confirmation linking the end of support for New World: Aeternum to these layoffs, an internal memo from Amazon Games stated that the company plans to scale back its focus on AAA projects, including major MMORPGs. Fans have connected the dots, concluding that the shutdown of the cult-favorite New World: Aeternum must be a direct result of these corporate-level changes.
New World: Aeternum has stated that players will be able to continue playing and purchasing the game on all platforms until further notice. However, it seems that players can no longer buy it on Steam, though it remains available through the PlayStation Plus Extra subscription and the Microsoft Store. To soften the blow of this news, Amazon Games has made the Nighthaven and Rise of the Angry Earth DLC free for all PC players, though this hasn't stopped the review bomb, and the game's average review score continues to decline.
It remains to be seen whether Amazon Games will announce a date for the game's official server shutdown. What is certain is that October 28 marked the end of an era for one of the major names in massively multiplayer online games, a loss that is likely to sadden fans of the genre, even those who weren't particularly invested in New World: Aeternum.
