After months of anticipation, players can finally get their hands on Amazon's new MMORPG, New World. Taking place on the fantastical Aeternum Island, players and their friends will certainly need to work together to unravel the magical mysteries that populate the strange land.
As with any MMORPG, questions inevitably arise over its payment structure. Each title in this particular genre tends to handle this topic a bit differently, so it comes as no surprise that some players may be a little confused in this regard. Fortunately, fans don't have to search far for the answers they seek.
Updated November 1, 2021 by Mark Hospodar: Fixing the issues that plague an ongoing MMORPG is often a frustrating process, especially for the player. The launch of the highly anticipated New World has proven no different. Bugs that run the gamut from the humorous to the game-breaking are still being ironed out.
This, of course, is important information to keep in mind for players still on the fence about purchasing New World. Although New World doesn't require a recurring subscription, fans still need to buy the base game. Thus, one's tolerance level when it comes to dealing with bugs is something worthwhile to consider before committing to a purchase.
Is New World Free To Play?
First and foremost, players must purchase a copy of New World in order to play it. New World is available to purchase from the Steam Store or Amazon. The game comes in two main varieties, which include:
- Standard Edition – $39.99
- Deluxe Edition – $49.99
It's worth noting that the Deluxe Edition includes the Woodsman Armor Skin, Woodsman Hatchet Skin, Mastiff House Pet, Rock/Paper/Scissors Emote Set, and the New World Digital Art Book. A limited-time Steelbook edition of the game was also originally offered but is currently unavailable on the official website.
Is New World Playable On Consoles?
At present, New World is only playable on the PC. It can be purchased either from Steam or Amazon. Thus, New World isn't able to be played on the Xbox or Playstation systems. Currently, it doesn't look very promising that New World will be ported to consoles in the foreseeable future.
Does New World Require A Paid Subscription?
No, New World does not require a recurring subscription fee to play. Fans who purchase the base game as outlined above can enjoy everything New World has to offer. As such, players and their friends can focus their full attention on the PvE and PvP action on Aeternum Island.
Players can also look forward to a whole range of activities and side tasks to keep them busy. Joining factions, collecting materials for crafting, and taking part in expeditions are just a few things that can occupy one's time in New World.
New World & Microtransactions
Although New World is free to play after the initial purchase, it does possess an in-game store. Players can spend real money on a variety of cosmetic items as well as quality of life tools such as XP boosters. However, making use of the in-game store is entirely optional on the part of the player.
The developers have stated that the purpose of the in-game store is not to give certain players an unfair edge over others. There are plans for the store itself to be expanded over time to give players more opportunities to customize their characters in different ways. Some of the items fans can expect to find in the store consist of:
- Themed Apparel & Weapon Skins
- Housing Decor & House Pets
- Emotes
- Dye Packs
- Company Crests
New World was released on September 28, 2021 and is currently available on PC.
