They are very similar to rabbits, but on a larger scale. There is also a Constellation of a Hare called Lepus. There is also a game clled Hare and Hounds, and the Hare is the player that is being pursued by the Hound player. Dictionary.com has an additional meaning: "Chiefly British. To go, run, or proceed swiftly, suddenly, or impulsively; rush; speed; take off."
