Fallout 76 players will need to redownload the entire game once the title's Milepost Zero update goes live in the coming days. A fresh install of Fallout 76 on Steam that uses the game's English language pack requires around 104 GB of free space.
Bethesda Game Studios' Fallout 76 has received a steady stream of new content since it launched in late 2018. In June, a completely new region was added to the online action RPG via Fallout 76's Skyline Valley update, which also introduced more quests and items. The next major update for the game, Milepost Zero, will also provide players with a lot of fresh content, but all of this can only be accessed after a full reinstall.
25 Beginner Tips for Fallout 76
Fallout 76 is significantly different from other games in the series, so players will need to take advantage of these tips to succeed in the game.
Due to a repackaging effort that will make Fallout 76's overall game size smaller, players must redownload the title when its Milepost Zero update drops on September 3, Bethesda's official support account on Twitter explained in a recent post. People were also informed that Fallout 76 is scheduled to go offline at 10 AM Eastern Time on that day to enable the new update to be applied. Some Twitter users questioned the need to redownload the game, while others welcomed the effort to make Fallout 76 smaller.
Fallout 76 Milepost Zero Update Release Date
- September 3, 2024
The industry is currently filled with games that have extremely large file sizes. Many popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and 2023's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 each take up around 150 GB of space to accommodate their impressive visual presentation and scale. This trend could reverse in the near future, however, as developers may start to lean more on advanced technologies like Unreal Engine 5's Nanite to help with game compression.
Among the most apparent changes in Milepost Zero will be the titular new location and a caravan mechanic. The latter should change the game's pacing by giving players something to do in between the events of Fallout 76, the game's creative director, Jon Rush, revealed in a recent interview. Milepost Zero will also rework Fallout 76's Legendary crafting system, which was introduced in the game's Nuclear Winter update from 2019.
Fallout 76 hit record-high player numbers in April right as Amazon Prime Video's critically acclaimed Fallout TV adaptation started airing. Gleaming Depths, Fallout 76's major update that will focus on endgame raids, is also set to be released in December. A trailer for the upcoming update featured a new boss and additional locations, among other things.
