Summary

  • Warner Bros. Continues to struggle with the development of its DC films, as evidenced by the cancellation of the Nightwing project.
  • Despite being stuck in development hell and hopes given by the release of other DC movies on HBO Max, Nightwing will not be made.
  • Fans of Nightwing are disappointed as the character has gained popularity in other media and a well-received solo comic run, but there may still be a chance to see him in the DCU or other projects.

The Nightwing film by LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay received a disappointing update that DC fans are getting used to.

Warner Bros. Has always struggled to get its DC films out of the development stage. The Flash was first announced in 2014, and Black Adam was first announced in 2007, and those films weren’t released until recently. Even after spending a decade in the development stage, The Flash and Black Adam struggled to be profitable. Additionally, the merger between Warner Bros. And Discovery shook up any projects in development, with further changes being made when James Gunn and Peter Safran were named Co-CEOs of DC Studios and decided to reboot the DCEU into the upcoming DCU.

The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez recently confirmed the Nightwing movie is among the canceled DC projects. Gonzalez replied to a post by Home of DCU, who said, “I hope Chris McKay still gets to work on his Nightwing movie.” Gonzalez didn’t mince words in his response when he said, “That project is dead.” McKay directed The LEGO Batman Movie and signed on to helm a live-action Nightwing movie for the DCEU in 2017. The film was supposed to be connected to Ben Affleck's Batman movie but was changed to possibly be a solo movie with little connection to the rest of the DCEU.

In June of 2021, Mckay said Nightwing was still stuck in development hell at Warner Bros. He was also given a little bit of hope for the film when DC announced that they would release movies like Batgirl and Blue Beetle on HBO Max and hoped that would give him a chance to make his film. However, Batgirl was never released despite being finished, and Blue Beetle received a theatrical release with a disappointing box office performance.

When Gunn was put in charge of DC Studios, he had a specific plan for the company's future. Fans are disappointed Nightwing was cut, as the character has been popular for a while and increased in popularity with a solo comic run that has been well-received and appearances in other media like Gotham Knights, Titans, and Harley Quinn.

Unfortunately, Mckay's Nightwing film won't be made, but hopefully, fans will see Nightwing on the big screen in the DCU and possibly in The Brave and The Bold.
