Summary

  • Ninja Gaiden 2 Black's small update fixes super-resolution and progression bugs.
  • Game balances coming in mid-February will address more issues.
  • Despite patches, game's large file size remains unchanged.

Team Ninja has recently unveiled the first patch for Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. The new Ninja Gaiden 2 Black patch is quite small, but the developers have promised that some of the game’s current issues will be addressed in the next update.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black was shadow-dropped during the recent Xbox Developer Direct, soon after the announcement of the upcoming Ninja Gaiden 4. The original Ninja Gaiden 2 was released in 2008 for Xbox 360, gaining a sort of remake for the PS3 a year later called Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Instead of being a remaster of one of these titles, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black mixes a bit of both games, diminishing the difficulty by lowering the enemy count, but not including some of the features that were found solely in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.

Now, Team Ninja has unveiled Update 1.0.6.0 for Ninja Gaiden 2 Black (also known as Update 1.002.000 on the PS5 version of the game). This first update is a small patch that addresses two small issues with the popular action game. The main problem fixed by the patch was making “super-resolution” work on the Microsoft Store version of the game, as options for DLSS and XeSS would not appear correctly. Also, it fixes a rare bug that could make it impossible for some players to progress in the story after defeating certain bosses. During the announcement, Team Ninja also revealed that another patch can be expected to release in mid-February. This upcoming update will bring some balance adjustments and additional features to the game, but no more details about it have been released yet.

Something that does not seem to be addressed in these patches, however, is the huge file size of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, as the game is around 86 GB, which annoyed some players. The original Ninja Gaiden 2 had only 7 GB in size, and the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, which was released more recently, has all Sigma versions of the first three games and is only 14 GB.

Apart from patching the game, Team Ninja is currently working on Ninja Gaiden 4. Reports indicate that Ninja Gaiden 4 is almost complete, and it’s largely in a polishing phase of development. In any case, the game is officially scheduled to be released during Fall 2025, so gamers will need to wait several months before they can finally play the eagerly awaited action game.

  • Fixed an issue where the options for DLSS and XeSS would not appear when selecting super resolution type on the Microsoft Store version of the game.
  • Fixed an issue that in rare cases made it impossible to progress after defeating certain bosses.
