Nintendo Addresses Recent Online Leaks

Nintendo says that it is aware of security issues recently reported by the media. This was revealed following recent reports that someone associated with a third-party company was able to gather insider knowledge via official Nintendo social media accounts in the past.

In early June, independent outlet 404 Media reported that, according to a copy of an internal Google database detailing potential privacy and security incidents, a contractor working for the tech giant used admin privileges to access private information from Nintendo's YouTube account about an unannounced Yoshi game. This game was the platformer Yoshi’s Crafted World by Good-Feel, the developer behind the recently released Princess Peach: Showtime! For the Switch. The Google contractor allegedly leaked data about the Yoshi Switch title on Reddit before it was officially announced to the public at E3 in 2017. Nintendo has seemingly addressed 404 Media's report and detailed the steps that it has started to take in an effort to improve its internal security.

Talking to investors in a recent shareholders meeting, Nintendo said that it was already aware of specific security issues that the media have reported, according to Twitter user NStyles. The company was responding to a question mentioning a story regarding a Nintendo insider leak on YouTube, but NStyles' posts did not identify any specific report. This inquiry into the current state of Nintendo's information security system also mentioned the recent data breach of Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa, as well as Nintendo's inability to stream on the video-sharing service Niconico due to a cyberattack on the platform.

New Nintendo Information Security Policies

Nintendo explained to shareholders that it works with specialist companies when dealing with information security, according to NStyles. The gaming juggernaut has introduced information security management as part of its internal system, and it is now also working on educating its employees, it added. Aside from games, there have been numerous supposed leaks regarding the successor of Nintendo's popular Switch handheld. Company president Shuntaro Furukawa has assured fans that there will be an announcement about this upcoming console, already dubbed by many as the Switch 2, within the fiscal year 2024, which ends on March 31, 2025.

One rumor has suggested that the Switch 2 will get an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The highly anticipated successor to the popular Nintendo console will also supposedly utilize Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling, or DLSS, upscaling technology.
