A Nintendo fan took to social media to share pictures of custom Switch 2 game card cases they had made, which consisted of cassette cases, customized sleeve art, and 3D-printed game card holders. The Switch 2 cassette case creator shared their handiwork from multiple angles, and fans complimented them for their attention to detail.
Like its predecessor, the Switch 2 uses game cards as its method of distributing physical copies of its games. While the original Switch game cards were black, the Switch 2's cards were changed to red as a way to differentiate between the two systems. Although Switch 2 game cards can hold up to 64GB of data, this limitation also resulted in the controversial Game-Key Card method used primarily by third-party developers to get their games to consumers. As of this writing, no Nintendo first-party titles for the Switch 2 utilize Game-Key Cards, meaning all the main data for games like Donkey Kong Bananza will be available out of the box, barring any post-launch patches.
Latest Switch 2 Update Fixes Backwards Compatibility Issues for Some Games
The latest Nintendo Switch 2 system update addresses some backward compatibility problems with some specific Switch titles.
Knowing that Switch 2 game cases have more intricate box art than the original Switch, a fan created a custom case that also doubled as a throwback to the 80s and 90s. On the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit, a Reddit user named No-Specific4938, also known as Eridyon, shared how they converted some cassette cases into ones that can hold a Switch 2 game card. Eridyon used The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as examples of their handiwork. For the covers, Eridyon used Photoshop as their main program, with a Canon photo printer to print them out onto double-sided paper. The cover art was then cut out and folded to fit the cassette cases. Each cover also included bar codes and rating information on the back.
Nintendo Fan Turns Cassette Cases Into Switch 2 Game Holders
The Switch 2 game card holders for each cassette case were 3D-printed, though a single filament will be enough to make several of them. The cassette cases come with a clear front and a red back, and a pack of five can be purchased on Amazon for $18.49 as of this writing. Although cassette tapes have since been succeeded by compact discs and digital streaming services like Spotify, games like Cassette Beasts have paid tribute to the once-popular audio format.
In response, other Reddit users complimented Eridyon for their handiwork. While Nintendo offers official carrying cases for the Switch 2, the creativity of fans like Eridyon remains a way for gamers to turn their collections into something memorable.
