Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer showcased the upcoming console alongside the original Joy-Cons.
  • An analysis of this comparison confirmed the console's previously leaked dimensions, which are said to be around 270 x 116 x 14mm with the Joy-Cons attached.
  • The reveal trailer also indirectly confirms that the Switch 2 will feature an 8-inch screen.

The Best War Games's analysis of the Switch 2 trailer has revealed the approximate dimensions of Nintendo's next console. The measurements align closely with some prior Switch 2 leaks, with minor discrepancies that can be reasonably explained.

Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 with a January 16 reveal trailer that had an apt runtime of 2:22. The promo video focused on the console's design and compared it to the original Switch. While many questions about the device still remain, the trailer revealed quite a few details, including some that aren't immediately obvious.

Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart Game Seems To Feature a Big Improvement

The newly confirmed Mario Kart game for the Nintendo Switch 2 seems to feature a big improvement compared to its predecessor.

For instance, the video indirectly confirmed the console's approximate dimensions, which can be deduced from the part around the 15-second mark, where the upcoming device is shown flanked by the Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Cons for the original Switch. Since the current-gen controllers are 102mm tall and the trailer displays them alongside the new console in a mostly straight orientation, it's possible to calculate how much larger the Switch 2 is compared to its predecessor by counting pixels and employing some basic arithmetic and trigonometry. The Best War Games did just that, estimating that the Switch successor is approximately 202mm wide and 115mm tall.

Nintendo Switch 2 Has a 16:9 8-Inch Screen

The same analysis suggests that the Switch 2's 16:9 screen is around 100 x 176mm in size. The Pythagorean theorem hence puts its diagonal at roughly 203mm, or eight inches. This is in line with a number of recent leaks, as well as one January 2024 report from Omdia Research Manager Hiroshi Hayase, who correctly predicted that the Switch 2 would feature an 8-inch display. He also forecast that the console will utilize an LCD panel rather than an OLED one, which has yet to be officially confirmed by Nintendo.

The Best War Games's estimate of the upcoming console's dimensions mostly aligns with the Switch 2 measurements that Dbrand leaked back in December 2024. The accessory maker suggested that the console would be slightly narrower but marginally taller, measuring 200mm in width and 115mm in height. It's plausible that this information was on point, and that The Best War Games arrived at slightly different figures because the frames used to analyze the Switch 2 size with the original Joy-Cons for scale didn't have the devices in a perfectly straight orientation—just close enough.

Using the same approach, it can be deduced that the second-generation Joy-Cons will be approximately 13mm taller than their predecessors. This size difference, combined with the use of magnets for attachment and a new connector type for charging, prevents the original Joy-Cons from physically attaching to the Switch 2. However, Nintendo has yet to clarify whether the old controllers will still function wirelessly with the new console.
