Nintendo Reveals New Switch 2 Dock Detail

Nintendo confirmed via the Nintendo Today app that the Switch 2 Dock fan will cool the system based on the Dock's internal temperature rather than just the console itself. Nintendo also shared a video of the Switch 2 Dock from different angles to tell prospective buyers where all the ports are when setting up the system.

The Switch 2's Dock will have two USB ports on the front side, along with a USB-C port at the back for the power supply. The updated HDMI port located on the back of the Dock will allow the Switch 2 to display games at up to a 4K 60 Hz resolution. An Ethernet port has been included in place of a third USB port to give users a way to directly connect to the Internet via a wired connection. By comparison, the original Switch Dock allowed users to connect a USB-to-Ethernet adapter from third-party brands like TP-Link directly to the Dock, which subsequently allowed an Ethernet cable to be plugged in.

While the Docks of both Switch systems have clear differences, Nintendo shared details about the Switch 2's Dock for users to note down. The company confirmed via the Nintendo Today app on iOS and Android that the Switch 2 Dock will cool the system based on the Dock's internal temperature. The Dock's fan will turn on at certain temperature thresholds, and fan speeds will be automatically adjusted until the system is sufficiently cooled. The information was shared on the r/NintendoSwitch2 subreddit by Reddit user OneAxyboi. Although users pondered if the temperature would be based on the Switch 2 itself rather than the Dock, other users pointed out that the Switch 2 temperatures could increase due to displaying games at 4K while keeping the system simultaneously powered. However, it is unclear what temperatures will activate the fan on the Switch 2 Dock.

Nintendo also shared a short video of the Switch 2 Dock from multiple angles, which was re-posted by Twitter user Stealth40k. The video also included a demonstration of how to plug the included power and HDMI cables into the Dock. Although the Switch 2 Dock takes cues from the original Switch Dock, the two feature different technologies. Ergo, the original Switch cannot work with the Switch 2 Dock, despite the initial similarities.

Although the Switch 2 will include a dock and other necessary cables at launch, additional Switch 2 Dock Sets will cost $120. With the Switch 2 launch just over five weeks away, only time will tell when Nintendo will share more details about the highly anticipated system.
