Summary

  • UK retailer GAME cancels some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders.
  • The retailer aims to reinstate as many pre-orders as possible.
  • This is unfortunate timing, as the Switch 2 is 1 week away from release.

UK retailer GAME has canceled some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders, though there is some hope for those impacted. Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on Thursday, June 5 after having first been revealed this past January. The Nintendo Switch 2 will be launching alongside a solid lineup of games, including the highly-anticipated Mario Kart World.

As expected, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders sold out almost instantly across various retailers. While steps were taken to combat them, scalpers have also played a role in the scramble to secure a Nintendo Switch 2. The chaos surrounding the launch is typical of any major new video game hardware, though there is also some unfortunate and unnecessary stress for some that thought they had locked-in their Switch 2 pre-order.

GAME, a major video game retailer in the UK akin to GameStop in the US, has canceled some Switch 2 pre-orders. It confirmed this devastating development on Twitter, where it "sincerely" apologized for canceling some Switch 2 pre-orders. On the bright side, it seems that some, if not all, of the Switch 2 pre-order cancellations through GAME were in error. The company said it is "working hard" to reinstate as many of the Switch 2 pre-orders as possible. It added that it is "doing everything" it can and "will be in touch with further updates and next steps."

GAME Has Canceled Some Switch 2 Pre-Orders

It's not clear exactly what happened or why some GAME Switch 2 pre-orders were canceled. Hopefully the situation is resolved in time for everyone to get their pre-ordered console, but that remains to be seen. We are a mere week away from the Switch 2 launch at the time of this writing, and so time is definitely running out.

When the Switch 2 launches on June 5, it's expected that some retailers will have stock beyond pre-orders. GameStop, Target, and various other retailers have suggested that there will be Switch 2 units available for purchase for non-pre-orders, though mileage will vary from one location to the next. Nintendo is expecting to sell 15-20 million Switch 2 units this fiscal year, and whether it succeeds in that goal will depend on if it can produce enough supply to meet demand.

There is clearly a lot of hype for the Nintendo Switch 2, though whether it maintains that momentum will depend on the pipeline of games. Switch 2 is launching with Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza is releasing in July, but it's unclear what Switch 2 exclusives early adopters can look forward to this fall. If the rumors of a Nintendo Direct happening soon are true, fans should get clarification on that front sooner rather than later.
