The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold over 2 million units in the U.S. Alone. It's been a big year for the much-anticipated console, which has seen record-breaking sales figures after a rocky pre-order situation and controversy over its use of game key cards. In addition, the sales success continues, with the Nintendo Switch 2 passing this recent milestone faster than its predecessor.
Despite complaints from gamers about its price and its handling of physical game cartridges, Nintendo's latest console has performed remarkably well. In July, the Switch 2 surpassed 6 million copies sold worldwide, taking less than two months to reach that impressive figure. Games like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World have also been major hits, and it seems things still aren't slowing down for Nintendo.
Switch 2 Breaks an All-Time Nintendo Record
Nintendo states that its new Switch 2 console launch has set an all-time company record within the first few days of its worldwide release.
Nintendo Switch 2 Has Sold Over 2 Million Units in the U.S.
Games industry analyst Mat Piscatella recently shared that the Switch 2 had passed 2 million units sold in the U.S. On Bluesky, revealing that those sales were enough to drive a 21% monthly increase in hardware spending. He also pointed out how the console is now 75% ahead of the pace of the original Switch at this point in the system's lifecycle. Piscatella himself had predicted that the Switch 2 would not outsell the original, although that was before Nintendo revealed it and pre-orders rapidly sold out. There's always a chance sales could slow down before it surpasses the OG Switch, but so far, the Switch 2 has set a breakneck pace.
July 2025 U.S. Video Game Market Highlights from Circana & Sensor Tower: A big month for Garena’s Free Fire helped lift video game content spending higher in July compared to a year ago, while Nintendo Switch 2 drove gains in hardware (while surpassing 2 million units sold along the way). Comparisons to its predecessor are not the only thing impressive about the Switch 2's recent milestone. Piscatella also revealed that hardware sales for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S fell by 47% and 69%, respectively, in July. That means Nintendo more than made up for significant declines among its competitors to lift the overall market. The Switch 2 has already passed the lifetime sales of the Series X and S in Japan, but now it's carrying the gaming hardware sector in the U.S., at least for the moment.
Unsurprisingly, the Switch 2 remains the best-selling piece of video game hardware in the U.S. For both July and 2025 as a whole. However, the system's massive success may make things all the more frustrating for some companies and gamers. There are reports that third-party studios are struggling to get Switch 2 dev kits, which could lead to fewer indie titles on the platform. Things could change in the future, as the system is still new, but for now, things are uncertain. What is certain, though, is that the Switch 2 has been good news for Nintendo.
