Summary

  • Nintendo Switch 2 will give players access to almost every main series Super Mario game at launch.
  • This is thanks to Nintendo Switch Online and backward compatibility.
  • Seven main series Super Mario games will not be playable on Switch 2 at launch.

When the Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, it will give players the chance to play the majority of the Super Mario franchise on a single system. The Nintendo Switch 2 is launching on June 5, and it's doing so without a brand-new Super Mario game at launch. But while there will be no new 2D or 3D Super Mario game for the Switch 2 on launch day, Mario will still be featured in one of the launch titles.

In fact, the Switch 2's flagship launch title is Mario Kart World. There is some controversy over Mario Kart World's $80 price tag, but chances are it will be one of the games that nearly everyone that gets a Switch 2 decides to pick up. Those hungry for a more traditional Super Mario experience won't have a new game to play at launch, but there are plenty of classics playable on the system for fans to check out instead.

'Stay Tuned' Nintendo Boss Teases Switch 2 Super Mario Game

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser teases that a new mainline Super Mario game could be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.

Thanks to ports, Switch 2's backward compatibility with the Switch 1, and the Nintendo Switch Online's Nintendo Classics service, the Switch 2 will have access to nearly every main series Super Mario game out of the box. On the 2D side, this means Super Mario Bros., The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Fans of 3D Super Mario games will have access to Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and Super Mario Odyssey.

There are some caveats to keep in mind when it comes to some of the Switch 2 Super Mario games. For example, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy are only playable on Switch 2 at launch through the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. We also know that Super Mario Sunshine is coming to Nintendo Classics at some point, though it will not be available at launch.

As far as the main series Super Mario games that won't be on Switch 2 at launch, fans will be missing out on New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, the first Mario Maker game, and Super Mario Run. Nintendo has re-released classic DS games before, so it's entirely possible that DS titles will come to the Nintendo Classics service as well, opening the door for the original New Super Mario Bros. To come to the Switch 2. The 3DS and Wii games may be better off getting remastered, though it's entirely possible they will get ported as well. The original Mario Maker is arguably made redundant by Mario Maker 2, and since Super Mario Run is a mobile game, chances are it will not be coming to the platform.

Nintendo supported the original Switch for a staggering eight years before it revealed the Switch 2, and so one has to imagine that the new console will have plenty of time to add classic games to its lineup. Here's hoping that by the end of the Switch 2 generation, all the Super Mario games are readily available in one place.
