Summary

  • Players can take their favorite strategy games on the go with Nintendo Switch for quick mission completion on the move.
  • Games like Wargroove 2 and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope offer engaging gameplay with unique squad options and fun team actions.
  • Tactical RPG enthusiasts will enjoy titles like Disgaea 4 Complete+ and Fire Emblem: Three Houses for deep combat and character development.

The tactical RPG takes everything there is to love about a JRPG and adds another dimension to it. Players will have access to parties that utilize a wide range of skills and abilities, but these abilities will not be effective unless players can set up these characters in the correct positions on a map.

Having these games on a Nintendo Switch means players can take these lengthy experiences on the go, and knock out a mission or two while they are traveling between destinations, or while having to wait in line. Each of these titles has a different pedigree behind them, making for a different experience.

5 Wargroove 2

A Superior Advanced Wars Style Game

Wargroove 2 Title
  • Developer: Chucklefish
  • Platforms: Windows, Nintendo Switch
  • Release Date: October 5th, 2023

Fans of Advanced Wars should immediately look into Wargroove and its sequel, Wargroove 2. Having Wargroove 2 is no excuse to not play the first game. Both are amazing, and the second can be played immediately after the first one. Both games will have players commanding various squads on a map, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Wargroove had a wide range of incredibly powerful units, and its sequel brings them all back to enjoy. Knowing what will be superior against enemy squads and positioning will be the keys to victory. There are also plenty of terrain buffs to make use of, as having a defensive advantage over an opponent can be a quick way to gain the upper hand.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is the follow-up title to the highly successful Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle — with Kingdom Battle being one of the best-selling Switch titles that was not published by Nintendo. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope keeps many of the elements of what made the first one so great and improves on many others — especially with the overworld feeling far more engaging.

6 Tactical Strategy Games With The Best Mercenary Systems, Ranked

Mercenary systems often play a big role in tactical strategy games, and there are so many great games out there that use this mechanic effectively.

Each of the characters is fun, and team actions add a level of engagement rarely seen in turn-based squad options. The game is weird, wacky, and just an utter delight to look at while playing, and when this is coupled with its fun gameplay, it's a title that is hard to put down from start to finish.

3 Disgaea 4 Complete+

Final Fantasy Tactics With Heavy Anime Vibes

Disgaea 4 Complete+ Overlord
  • Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Windows
  • Release Date: October 29th, 2019

The Disgaea franchise is known for its over-the-top humor and wildly surreal world settings. Each game has a different story with different characters, but past games are referenced in follow-up titles. The games also have a blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and commonly used anime tropes. Players will enjoy many familiar tactical RPG elements such as commanding various units, but also some unique elements. One of which is known as the Dark Assembly, a way in which players can pass bills in the game that can completely alter the game’s rules.

One of the features that players will quickly want to master is Geo Effects. Players will find cells that will be blinking a certain color, as well as special blocks that state they grant an effect to all cells that match the color of the one it is on. This can allow players to stack the odds in their favor by stacking these blocks on a single color or destroying a block to cause all the matching cells to change to the color of the block and damage any enemies in the process.

Into the Breach is one of the best tactical indie game titles around, and will match giant mechs against giant monsters to duke it out on small grid maps. These maps will have different terrains depending on the island players deploy to. Just like the X-COM games, players will be able to select from various missions, with more challenging ones offering better rewards. Once ready, they will send out three of their mech units, which are made even better with a pilot.

5 Ways Fire Emblem Is The Best Tactical RPG (& 5 It’s Final Fantasy Tactics)

Gamers enjoy tactical RPGs for their focus on character growth, careful positioning, and resource management. Which game does it best?

The mechs featured in the game will each come with a Special, which can act in tandem with each pilot's Special. This can allow for a pilot that gives its mech a shield at the start of the mission, with a mech that can take two actions instead of moving — a great blend of both offense and defense.

Fire Emblem is a long-running franchise that has amassed a loyal fanbase over its many amazing titles. Three Houses has impressive cutscenes, with some incredibly well-designed levels for when players dive into the gameplay. The combat is deep and satisfying but features quite a learning curve. This is coupled with an even deeper level of development of the player's characters when not in combat situations.

The game features a school-like setting, where they will have their characters training to become more powerful. If this is starting to sound a bit overwhelming, there is no need to get turned off, as the game does a brilliant job of automating things for the player. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a must-play for any tactical RPG enthusiast looking for their next favorite game.
