Summary
- A new list from Nintendo shows six apps and over 40 games with Switch 2 compatibility issues.
- Some of these issues may be fixed before the console's launch, while others may require additional updates.
- Titles with current support issues include Doom Eternal, Pizza Tower, and Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist.
Nintendo has updated its ever-growing list of games and apps with Switch 2 compatibility errors. A loss of some backward compatibility is nothing out of the ordinary for a new console generation, but which games and apps Nintendo's upcoming system supports and which it doesn't have been a little inconsistent, leading to some confusion. As the Nintendo Switch 2 release day draws closer, fans are getting a better picture of what to expect in terms of compatibility, and there are some notable questions remaining.
Back when Nintendo first revealed its new console, it confirmed that the Switch 2 would have limited backward compatibility, but it didn't specify what that would look like. At the time, the company only said that some Switch 1 titles may not be available on Switch 2. Since then, it's been confirmed that a few games will work on both systems and some will require upgrades for the Switch 2. The company has now provided a growing list of apps that aren't compatible now but will be in the future.
Switch 2 Stock is Starting to Arrive at Retailers
The Nintendo Switch 2 is now days from release, and some retailers are already getting their shipments of the console for the big launch.
As spotted by Nintendo Life, Nintendo updated its website on May 27 to list over 40 games that don't have Switch 2 support right now but will get it via an update either at launch or sometime after. Nintendo has previously explained that the Switch 2 doesn't solely rely on hardware for backward compatibility, which means just because something isn't available at first doesn't mean it won't be incompatible forever. That's good news for the console's library of older titles, but it also means that it will take time and work for some games and apps to work on the system.
Nintendo Lists Six Apps and Over 40 Games With Switch 2 Compatibility Issues
Titles with current support issues include Doom Eternal, Pizza Tower, and Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist, and it's unclear when any of these games will get the update to make them playable on the Switch 2. Some say Doom Eternal is one of the best FPS games on Switch, so it'd be a shame if it's not available on Switch 2 at launch, but it may get the needed update before the console's release. Other games, like Dead by Daylight and Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, are listed as having startup issues that Nintendo is currently investigating, so these may not need a compatibility update per se, but may need at least a patch before they're ready to play on the system.
In addition to these games, Nintendo listed six apps with Switch 2 compatibility issues, including:
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit
- ABEMA
- Crunchyroll
- Hulu
- InkyPen
- Niconico
The Nintendo Labo app is unlikely to get a Switch 2 update, as the console is too big to fit into the accompanying VR goggles. As for the others, though, they may get updated versions in the future, but as with the games, it's not clear when that will happen. There are plenty of other games requiring an upgrade to work on Switch 2, some for free and some paid, too, so fans should keep an eye on these to know what to expect.
