A crafty gamer has added a twist of nostalgia to a Switch game case by making it in the likeness of an NES cartridge. Although discs have been the most popular method for storing games for decades, Nintendo consoles like the Switch, 3DS, and Nintendo 64 all use cartridges.
Nintendo's legacy of success in the gaming industry can be traced back to the 1980s with arcade games like the original Donkey Kong and consoles like the NES. The NES was the first time that many experienced games with a level of complexity not previously possible on home consoles, likely marking the first time many people first heard of Nintendo. Much of this can be owed to the launch titles for the NES which included the original Super Mario Bros., Excitebike, and Duck Hunt.
One gamer has brought this era of Nintendo to the modern age by 3D printing a Switch game case that looks just like an NES cartridge. The creator of this case, known as whopperlover17 on Reddit, shared a video of them making the case with a 3D printer which allowed them to include finer details such as the ridges that go along the front of an NES cartridge. With the Switch being a portable console and its cartridges being very compact, there is a big market for Switch game carrying cases that have inspired gamers to make their own such as another fan who made Switch game cases made to look like Pokemon Game Boy cartridges.
Whopperlover17 embellished the cartridge case with a custom sticker featuring the name of their Etsy store where they make other 3D-printed items. These include another Switch game case made to look like the green pipes from the Mario series. While these cases are fan-made, they are very much in line with other officially licensed products. Meanwhile, Nintendo has not shied away from celebrating its legacy by making NES and SNES games playable on Switch.
While Nintendo has had its fair share of peaks and valleys in its roughly 40 years of making video games, its legacy is so strong that nostalgia for Nintendo is almost universal in its reach. The company seems to be fully aware of this and has continuously embraced it even in smaller ways such as by including filters for Game Boy games available through Nintendo Switch Online. Fan creations like this carrying case show that this nostalgic love is still alive with fans even as more time has passed since the NES era.
