Summary
- Nintendo Switch Online adds three Japan-exclusive Starfy games, bringing a unique aquatic platforming experience to Western players.
- With Nintendo expanding its online service, it's a smart move to introduce lesser-known franchises like Starfy to offer new experiences.
- The possible future addition of the DS game, The Legendary Starfy, to Nintendo Switch Online, could open doors for more older titles from the DS library.
Nintendo Switch Online will be adding three Japan-only Game Boy Advance games from the Starfy franchise. While most Western fans would be unfamiliar with the title, a few die-hard Game Boy Advance players have called for the Starfy series to return to the Nintendo Switch. The title's only non-Japan exclusive game was released for the DS back in 2009, but the franchise has had quite a few games in its name. What made the game interesting was its unique take on being an aquatic platformer.
With Nintendo bolstering its Nintendo Switch Online service, it feels right for the company to try and dig deep within the rich history to be able to provide experiences that only the Switch can provide. While staples like the Mario and Zelda franchises are a regular focus of Nintendo Switch Online, there are actually many properties that Nintendo can take advantage of, and it seems the new additions show that previously unheard-of games can make a comeback.
Nintendo Switch Online will be adding three Densetsu no Starfy games to its selection on July 12. This marks the first time that the three titles will be coming to the Western market. It's a good move by Nintendo to introduce the franchise, as well as to provide a new experience for non-Japanese players. While the titles retain their non-English text, it's still an easy way for Nintendo to add new titles to the service that players haven't really experienced much elsewhere. A similar situation happened in early July when Nintendo Switch Online added seven NES games, one of which was another Japan-only exclusive, The Mystery of Atlantis.

Hopefully, with the three Starfy games joining Nintendo Switch Online, DS's The Legendary Starfy could also be considered as a future addition. That is highly probable if Nintendo finally decides to bring DS games to Nintendo Switch Online. While the mechanics might be more complicated than usual due to the dual-screen mechanic of the DS, the Wii U did have some Virtual Console entries from the handheld. The Switch's hardware may be able to run the games, but the issue of presentation may be one of the key factors stopping it.
Granted, there are many other games from the DS library that should make their way to the Switch. While they aren't as lesser-known and unique as the Starfy series, perhaps exploring ports of DS games to the Switch may open new doors for other older titles. There are quite a few titles on the DS that could easily be played on one screen. With the Switch's touchscreen mechanic, many of those classics could still be played on Nintendo's current hardware.
The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console launched in 2017, capable of being played in handheld mode or docked to a television. The Switch Lite, a handheld-only model, followed in 2019, with an OLED refresh coming in 2021.
