Summary
- An adult-only Nintendo Switch Online app called Nintendo 64 Switch 18+ will be released in Japan on November 30.
- The app will be required for playing Rare's N64 classics Jet Force Gemini and GoldenEye 007 via the service.
- The app likely owes its existence to the fact that both Jet Force Gemini and GoldenEye 007 have mature, Z ratings in Japan, preventing them from being sold to gamers under 18.
An adult-only app serving as an extension of the Nintendo Switch Online service will be released in Japan on November 30. Its upcoming launch appears to be connected to the surprise arrival of Jet Force Gemini to Nintendo Switch Online, specifically its Expansion Pack tier.
Originally released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, Jet Force Gemini is a sci-fi third-person shooter developed by Rare. Since the British company is nowadays part of Xbox Game Studios, its classic N64 titles weren't exactly high on the list of games many were expecting to see added to the Nintendo Switch Online catalog. Yet this widespread perspective started changing in January, when both Xbox Game Pass and NSO received the remaster of GoldenEye 007, another one of Rare's N64 classics.

The 18+ NSO App Will Be Required For Playing GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini
However, the NSO debut of GoldenEye 007 initially only happened in the West. The game is now finally set to reach the Japanese version of the service almost a year later, alongside an adult-only app called Nintendo 64 Switch 18+. As first spotted by VGC, it would appear that the adult-only app owes its existence to the fact that both GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini were released with a Z rating in the Far Eastern country, which is the only age classification that's actively regulated by Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO).
Specifically, the CERO mandates that all Z-rated games in Japan are separated from other, more leniently classified software. In the context of digital platforms, this regulation stipulates that such titles need to be contained within a storefront that requires users to verify they are at least 18 before allowing them to browse its contents. The mature Z ratings that Jet Force Gemini and GoldenEye 007 received in Japan exceed their Western classifications, which deemed them suitable for anyone aged 16 and older.
The Nintendo 64 Switch 18+ app will launch in Japan on November 30. As things stand right now, it seems that its day-one library will include both GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini. While the former is already available to NSO subscribers in the West, the latter is planned to be added to the Western version of the service in December.
The N64 portion of the Nintendo Switch Online catalog is exclusive to the Expansion Pack tier of the service across all markets. Its annual membership for individuals is priced at $49.99 in the U.S. And ¥4,900 (~$33) in Japan.
