While the Nintendo Switch may not be backwards compatible with any of Nintendo's previous consoles, the company does seem committed to bringing some of its most popular classic titles to the console. Since Nintendo Switch Online launched, Nintendo has added a curated library of NES, SNES, N64, and even Sega Genesis games to the system. Now, Nintendo is further expanding those offerings with the addition of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles for subscribers to enjoy.
These curated libraries of classic games have been a treat for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and now all eyes are on what console comes next. Game Boy and Game Boy Advance were a surprising addition to the service as many users thought that GameCube was the obvious next choice. However, it seems like Nintendo had other plans and has chosen to explore almost its entire console history. That means that a curated library of GameCube games will probably be added soon, and it is very likely that they are the next step for Nintendo Switch Online.
The GameCube is Next in Line
Nintendo seems to be adding games from its most popular consoles in order of release. The service started with iconic NES games like Super Mario Bros. And Metroid. Nintendo then continued expanding the catalog with the addition of SNES games like Super Mario Kart and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Soon after, it continued to sweeten the deal by adding N64 games like Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 with its new Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pa ck. While many thought the GameCube was next in line, Nintendo threw a wrench in the system when it chose to add Sega Genesis games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 instead.
Now, it seems Nintendo is getting back on track with the addition of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. These are the first handheld titles getting added to Nintendo Switch Online, and that has made some players excited about the potential of Nintendo DS titles in the future. While there is a strong possibility that DS is in the cards, the next likeliest candidate is GameCube. The system launched eight months after the Game Boy Advance hit store shelves, and that would make it next in line for Nintendo's trip down memory lane.
The GameCube Library Would Be Perfect For Switch
The GameCube is fondly remembered by the Nintendo community, and it is easy to see why. The GameCube controller is often considered the best Nintendo controller for Super Smash Bros, but the real highlight of the console was its library of great titles. The console was the birthplace of acclaimed franchises like Pikmin and Animal Crossing, and it was the home of popular games like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Mario Sunshine. The GameCube had a very impressive lineup during its tenure, and most of its games would make perfect additions to the Nintendo Switch Online catalog.
The potential GameCube games are not limited to first-party titles either, as the console had very strong third-party support too. Studios like Activision, Ubisoft, THQ, and Konami were all creating games for the console even after the Wii had hit store shelves. Sega was also a major player on the console after it pulled out of the hardware market, and it released popular games like Super Monkey Ball and Sonic Adventure for the system. Nintendo and Sega continue to have a good working relationship with the addition of Sega Genesis games to Nintendo Switch Online, and many of Sega's GameCube games would be worthy additions to the Switch catalog.
If Nintendo continues down this path then there is a strong possibility that the GameCube is the next console to join the Nintendo Switch Online catalog. The console is too iconic to be left out of the nostalgia trip, and it has the potential to really boost the appeal of the service. There are so many great games that could shine once more on the Switch, and their addition would be a treat for any Nintendo fan.
