Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will soon have two more N64 games to play, as Nintendo announced that Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble would arrive on the service in mid-December. Both of the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online titles are 3D platformers developed by Ubisoft, and will be exclusively available for NSO subscribers with the Expansion Pack upgrade.

Periodically, Nintendo gives its online subscribers some new games to play via one of its Nintendo Classics apps, from the NES to the GameCube. Once Rayman and Tonic Trouble are added, there will be 42 Nintendo 64 games available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members in North America. This count includes system-selling games like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, along with dark and gritty titles like Forsaken 64 and Perfect Dark. The latter two games are exclusively available via Nintendo 64 Mature 17+ app in North America, which is available as a separate download from the main Nintendo 64 app in supported territories across the globe.

As for the upcoming titles that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can soon play, Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble will be available on the N64 app for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers starting on December 17. Rayman 2: The Great Escape was first released on the N64 in October 1999 in Europe, and made its way to North America that November. Rayman 2 is considered one of the top titles to feature Ubisoft's platforming protagonist. Rayman 2: The Great Escape is the first 3D platformer in the series, and has been praised for its gameplay and its graphical style. In the game, Rayman is tasked with fending off a pirate incursion on the Glade of Dreams by Admiral Razorbeard, and saving Globox after the latter is captured by Razorbeard's crew.

Tonic Trouble initially launched on the N64 in August 1999, two months before Rayman 2's debut. Tonic Trouble is a 3D platformer that sees players control a purple alien named Ed, who accidentally causes Earth to mutate after spitting out an unidentified liquid that subsequently fell from a trapdoor on board the spaceship he was cleaning. After the mysterious liquid contaminates the planet's water, the game's main antagonist, Grogh, begins his reign of conquest after drinking some of the contaminated water and gaining superpowers as a result. Like other N64 games that are available on the Switch Online service, Switch 2 users can take advantage of features like rewind and CRT filters when playing through Rayman 2 and Tonic Trouble for the first time.

The End of a Busy Fall Season for Nintendo Classics

The imminent arrival of Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble will mark the likely end to a busy autumn season for Nintendo Switch Online members. On November 25, Nintendo shadow dropped two NES and two Game Boy titles for players to download, including Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters and Battletoads. During Halloween, Luigi's Mansion was finally released on the Nintendo GameCube app for subscribers to enjoy, and the SNES app saw Mario and Wario, Fatal Fury Special, and Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind released in early October.

However, the Nintendo 64 app still has a few top-selling titles missing from its growing repertoire, as games like Super Smash Bros. And Donkey Kong 64 are still not available as of this writing. With 2026 right around the corner, it remains to be seen what surprises Nintendo has in store for NSO subscribers in the upcoming year.
