  • Some of the features, like the rewind function and a CRT filter, will be exclusive to the Switch 2.
  • Control remapping will be available on both the Switch and Switch 2.

Nintendo has recently showcased the upcoming new features that the N64 games on the Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics collection will get after the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. While some of these new features will be available only on the Nintendo Switch 2, one of the most eagerly awaited ones, the ability to see and remap controls, will be available on both the old and new devices.

In 2021, Nintendo added a new tier to its Nintendo Online subscription service called “Expansion Pack,” which included access to a library of Nintendo 64 titles, including popular games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64. The subscription also originally included access to Sega Genesis games, and eventually added Game Boy Advance titles to the collection. Earlier this year, Nintendo revealed that the Nintendo 64 games on the Switch 2 would get new features.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is now days from release, and some retailers are already getting their shipments of the console for the big launch.

Now, Nintendo has finally unveiled a short video with the new features in action, showcasing the changes the service will make when the Nintendo Switch 2 releases on June 5. Most of the new features will be exclusive to the Switch 2, including the ability to rewind games on the Nintendo 64, and a new CRT filter which looks very authentic. The rewind feature seems fairly easy to use, as it saves screenshots of previous moments in the game, allowing the player to select them to return in case they make a mistake. The most noteworthy of these features, however, is the ability to view and remap the controls of N64 games on both Switch consoles, which the fanbase has previously criticized Nintendo for not including before.

When the Switch 2 is finally released, GameCube games will also be added to Nintendo Switch Online. According to Nintendo, popular games such as F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Soulcalibur 2 will be available at first, with others such as Luigi’s Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine coming at a later date. Unfortunately, only gamers playing on a Switch 2 with an Expansion Pack subscription will be able to get access to these new titles, though.

Apart from these games via Switch Online, gamers will also have some titles released on day one for the Nintendo Switch 2. The list includes the eagerly awaited Mario Kart World, and some games already available on other platforms, such as Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Hogwarts Legacy, Street Fighter 6, Split Fiction, and others.
