Summary
- Nintendo Switch surpasses 143 million units sold globally.
- Nintendo Switch becomes the top-selling system in Japan, surpassing the Nintendo DS and Game Boy handhelds.
- Popular titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet continue to perform well.
The Nintendo Switch has crossed yet another impressive milestone by selling over 143 million units worldwide. Nintendo’s latest console has been a blockbuster success for the legendary gaming company ever since it first hit the market in 2017, with its sales being bolstered by major first-party titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Just last February, the Nintendo Switch surpassed the PlayStation 4 in sales on its way to becoming one of the most successful consoles of all time.
Even more sales milestones were crossed in 2024 so far, as the Nintendo Switch officially surpassed the Big N’s own Nintendo DS and Game Boy handhelds in Japan, becoming the highest-selling system of all time in that particular country. Elsewhere, the Nintendo Switch is projected to come within striking distance of outselling the PlayStation 2, the highest-selling console in history, should current trends continue.
Nintendo Switch Online Is Adding a Fan Favorite Pokemon Game
The Nintendo Switch Online subscription service is adding an unexpected fan favorite Game Boy Advance Pokemon title in the near future.
The Nintendo Switch has taken another step toward that goal, according to Nintendo’s latest financial report. 143.42 million Nintendo Switch units have been sold globally, with 2.1 million of these units being sold between April and June of 2024. However, sales have dropped by 46.3% in comparison to the same period from last year.
The Nintendo Switch Has Sold Over 143 Million Units
Nintendo Switch software sales have also taken a 41.3% dip in the first fiscal quarter of 2025, reaching just 30.64 million units. To be fair, last year proved to be extremely lucrative for Nintendo thanks to the blockbuster release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and extra promotion from The Super Mario Bros. Movie hitting the big screens. On the plus side, games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet continue to draw in big numbers.
As of this writing, the Nintendo Switch is entering its eighth year on the market, with the reveal of the Switch's eventual successor reportedly coming sometime between now and March 2025. In the meantime, the Nintendo Switch continues to be one of the Big N’s most successful consoles, even if sales are slowing down in the wake of the next system’s impending arrival. Not much is known yet about the tentatively named “Switch 2,” except that it could retain the hybrid model that helped make the original Switch such an overwhelming hit with gamers.
