In a recent interview with Kotaku, Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America, expressed his feelings about third party publishers not developing more A-list titles for the Nintendo Wii:

"I'm extremely disappointed. I've had this conversation with every publisher who makes content that is not available on my platform. The conversation goes like this: 'We have a 22-million unit installed base. We have a very diverse audience. We have active gamers that hunger for this type of content. And why isn't it available?'"

The interview comes shortly after a recent announcement showing that Nintendo's profits have dropped by 52% over the last year. Some of the dip is attributed to a lack of high profile titles being released this year for the Wii. In response to an assertion that hardware might be a limiting factor Reggie claimed:

"We've shown that that's just not the case. High-quality, effectively marketed against our installed base will sell, period end of story."

Some claim that the Wii-gimmick is starting to wear off, and that the Wii lacks other features that come standard with the other consoles, like HD Support. When asked about HD on the Wii, Reggie reconfirmed that there will be no HD on the Wii, but instead offered up a cryptic statement about the next console:

Reggie's not happy with you third party devs! Reggie's not happy with you third party devs!

"The way we at Nintendo do things is, you know, when we will move to a new generation, it's because there are some fundamental things the [current] console cannot do. What that says is that simply the addition of HD capability will not be the next step for us. There will be more to it. There will be additional capability. There will be additional elements, and, given that, it is far into the future."

I just hope that means the next console will blow us away instead of providing a library of games the average gamer has no interest in playing.

What do you think Reggie means when he says "additional capability"? How do you feel about the current Wii library?
