No Man’s Sky launched an Expedition called Relics, and it’s all about discovering ancient bones and tuning in to one’s own personal paleontologist. This Expedition builds on those that have come before it, introducing some new Phase objectives and mixing them with old familiar ones.

Expeditions in No Man’s Sky are special events that only last for a few weeks. In the Relics Expedition’s case, players will have six weeks from launch to complete it. If they cannot beat the Expedition within that timeframe, they’ll miss out on exclusive rewardsunless the developers decide to rerun the Expedition at a later date.

The first Phase of the Relics Expedition will have Travelers running across the galaxy to reach new locations and find specific planets. In particular, Travelers will eventually need to reach the Xifenqj II System and the Bicentiu XIV planet. Some key tips for completing this phase in No Man’s Sky include:

  • Scan as many minerals as possible
  • Mine a lot of Chromatic Metal, Carbon, and Ferrite Dust to make warp fuel
  • Dig up a lot of ancient bones

This Expedition can be a little glitchy, especially regarding the Dig Sites. If Travelers can’t unlock the Junior Field Agent objective, try flying to the space station and back to the dig site a few times. Travelers may also need to exit the game and log back in.

Another reason Travelers may not be able to unlock the Junior Field Agent objective is that the bone types they have aren’t a complete skeleton. Try digging up the bones at the dig site to complete the set. Or, as mentioned before, quit the game and then reload. Additionally, if Travelers play in a group, try completing the objective solo.

Phase 2 of the Relics Expedition in No Man's Sky has objectives similar to those of Phase 1. Some of these objectives offer rewards that can make other objectives easier, so completing them in order is worth doing when possible. Here's a quick overview of how to complete these objectives:

Travelers must head to the Elea Alpha in Adrielde Cycler System to get to the second dig site in the Relics Expedition. This dig site can be pretty buggy, so Travelers should consider going there solo and turning multiplayer off. Here are some quick tips to get through this particular phase in No Man's Sky as quickly as possible:

  • Scan as many species as possible while completing other objectives
  • Complete Descendants to get free creature pellets to use for Domestic Relatives
  • Destroy Hazardous Flora while completing other objectives
  • Dig up Buried Caches to find Records and analyze them in the Exosuit

The Associate Field Agent objective can be glitchy as well. The best way to complete it is to head to the nearby planet, Ijona 86/S5, which has tons of Ancient Bones. Travelers will need to keep digging up bones until the objective is completed.

Additionally, Travelers can trade their bones with a field agent at one of the dig sites. Trading is a great way to get bones that Travelers might be missing to complete a skeleton.

Phase 3 of the Relics Expedition in No Man's Sky has Travelers interacting with more creatures and trading bones. Travelers will also need to locate and travel to the third dig site. This particular phase relies heavily on RNG, so it may take longer than others to complete. Here's a quick overview of how to complete these objectives:

In this phase, Travelers will spend a lot of time scanning, taking photos, and fishing. Much like other Dig Sites, Travelers may experience problems talking to the dig site leader or completing certain objectives, like Senior Field Agent. Try the aforementioned methods to get them to work.

Otherwise, here are some tips to complete Phase 3 of the Relics Expedition in No Man’s Sky as fast as possible:

  • Travel to a planet filled with creatures to find them grouped up together for the Snapshot in Time objective
  • To complete the Snapshot in Time objective, at least 5 creatures must be in the photo at the same time
  • The drop rate for Bonefish on Toxic planets is low, so Travelers should craft a Shadow Lure and fish in deep water at night to increase their chances of catching them

The hardest objectives for this particular phase are fishing and getting enough creatures into a photo at the same time. Travelers should try to complete the Snapshot in Time objective first, since it will give them a free fishing rod for their multi-tool.

Travelers can still get a fishing rod early by purchasing the recipe at the Space Anomaly in the Multi-Tool Research hub.

Bonefish don’t have the highest drop rates, so this might become a bottleneck for some Travelers who the RNG Gods don’t favor. Travelers should craft a Shadow Lure to increase the chance of fishing up a Bonefish. The recipe is as follows:

  • 2 Antimatter
  • 1 Metal Plating
  • 40 Cyto-Phosphate

A Shadow Lure allows Travelers to fish at night, and Bonefish only enter deep waters at night. The good news is that Travelers only need to catch one Bonefish to satisfy the objective.

Hopefully, Travelers have been digging up a lot of Ancient Bones during the Relics Expedition in No Man's Sky because it matters in Phase 4. Make Bone Dish and Serve To Cronus

Space Anomaly

While many of these objectives have Travelers performing the same gameplay loops, like digging up enough ancient bones to create a reptilian skeleton, there are a few new challenges. To complete this phase as fast as possible, keep these tips in mind:

  • Dig up lots of bones from the start to satisfy the Principle Field Agent, Deeper Underground, and The Archaeologist objectives
  • Go to the Space Anomaly and head to Cronus to use his cooking station instead of building a base
  • Present any bone dish to Cronus, but making Bone Broth can satisfy both the Hearty Stock objective and the Bone Appetit objective

Some of these objectives build on activities from past phases. If Travelers have been regularly digging up bones, they should be in good shape for this phase. If not, they may need to spend a little extra time collecting Ancient Bones.

The other major difference in this phase is its focus on cooking. Travelers can summon the Space Anomaly and head to Iteration: Cronus' area to cook certain dishes. On his left is a grill that allows Travelers to cook the newest recipes. To cook Bone Broth, follow these steps:

  • Place a fossil in an ingredient slot to turn it into Softened Marrow, then repeat this process
  • Take the Softened Marrow and put one in each of the two ingredient slots to make Bone Broth

From there, Travelers can talk to Cronus and present the dish to him. Keep in mind that Cronus may not want Bone Broth. However, Travelers should be able to present him with some other bone dish, such as Bone Milk, which Travelers can make by placing two fossil bones in each ingredient slot during the same cooking phase.

Travelers can also further refine Bone Milk into Bone Butter by placing it in the cooking station again. This turns the milk into cream. To turn the Bone Cream into Bone Butter, simply put the cream in the ingredient slot and run the cooker again.

Any Space Station or Merchant Hub

For the final stretch of Phase 5, Travelers will need a handful of Creature Pellets, a whole lot of bones or assembled skeletons, and a fighting spirit. To complete this phase as fast as possible, consider the following tips:

  • Make some Creature Pellets to feed to creatures to make them defecate
  • Look for planets with Ancient Bones to find Ancient Guardians
  • Sell completed skeletons to make a lot of money quickly

One of the more challenging objectives of this phase is to search for dung samples. Instead of waiting for creatures to use the bathroom, Travelers can speed up the process by feeding them Creature Pellets. They're relatively easy to make as long as a Traveler has some meat on them. Just put them through the grill near Cronus on the Space Anomaly if Travelers are without a base.

Memory Stones are relatively easy to find. They typically spawn on planets with ruins or Ancient Bones. A planet with a Dig Site on it will likely have Memory Stones on it, too. They're recognizable by their glowing blue center. Simply interact with five of them to complete the objective.

Ancient Gardians protect Ancient Bone sites, so Travelers will need to find a planet with Ancient Bones to take on Ancient Guardians. Interact with the Waking Stones to awaken the guardian and prepare for a fight. Defeating 5 of them will satisfy the objective.

Finally, Travelers will need to sell 2,500,000 units of bones. The fastest way to do so is to complete a skeleton on a display, then sell the display on a Space Station or at the merchant near a Dig Site. Displays sell for a good amount of units, especially if Travelers have managed to collect rarer specimens.

Once Travelers have completed all objectives in all five phases of the Relics Expedition in No Man's Sky, they've successfully finished the special event. Keep an eye on the Nexus, however, as there are more bone-related missions that Travelers might find lucrative.
