Precious few games have been as consistently improved as No Man's Sky, a once-maligned release that has been radically transformed in the decade following its disastrous launch. While there have been comeback stories in the industry before, it's hard to think of another game that has gotten anywhere near the same sort of support as No Man's Sky's myriad free updates.

And this trend is continuing with the recently released Voyagers update, which enhances No Man's Sky with fresh role-playing systems, customization options, graphical enhancements, and more. As the name suggests, this free expansion is designed to augment players' exploration experience, with many of its most significant new features designed to serve this end. At the time of writing, the Voyagers update is currently available for download on all platforms.

The Voyagers update is also referred to as patch 6.0 by Hello Games, further communicating its significance.

No Man's Sky Voyagers Update: The Headliners

No Man's Sky update adds customizable, Starfield-style ships

Corvette-Class Spaceships

Corvette ships are easily the highlight of the Voyagers update. These spacecraft are deeply customizable, able to be expanded with distinct modules in a personalization suite similar to the starship options in Starfield. Much like in Starfield, these modules offer more than just cosmetic changes: players can explore the interior of their custom ships, so new rooms become part of the broader interactive experience.

Corvette ships move faster than normal spacecraft, can serve multiple practical purposes thanks to specialized ship modules, and can be outfitted with windows to get a real-time view of No Man's Sky's rendition of the galaxy. New modules can be discovered by exploring the game world, so the full potential of Corvettes has yet to be defined.

It's hard to overstate how momentous the Corvette class is, as these ships offer an unprecedented level of player control when it comes to space travel and customization. Players can even bring their friends aboard, deepening No Man's Sky's multiplayer sandbox. The Voyagers update also comes with a Corvette-focused community expedition.

Skydiving and Spacewalking

Part and parcel of the Corvette ships is the next-biggest new feature: the ability to leave one's ship at any time. If a player is in orbit around a planet, for instance, they can simply head out of the airlock and float through space to their heart's content. Alternatively, players can now perform HALO (high-altitude, low-orbit) jumps from their Corvette ships thanks to a new skydiving mechanic. This freedom of motion may not be quite as revolutionary as the rest of the new Corvette-related features, but it's certainly among No Man's Sky's most entertaining changes.

Miscellaneous Changes in the No Man's Sky Voyagers Update

No Man's Sky Mecha Mouse

Naturally, there are a number of other, smaller improvements and tweaks accompanying the main attractions of the Voyagers update, including:

  • Console control rebinding
  • Moment-based order-independent transparency rendering (MBOIT), which improves the appearance of translucent surfaces
  • DLSS 4 support on PC
  • The Skyborn Exosuit outfit and Skyborn jetpack
  • Mecha Mouse companion (accessed upon completion of the aforementioned community expedition)
  • Enhanced lighting on player-character models
  • PSSR support for PS5
  • Vigilant jetpack trail (accessed upon completion of the community expedition)

These additional changes might not be earth-shattering, but they are nevertheless welcome. Graphical improvements via things like MBOIT and DLSS 4 support should make for a better overall experience, and something like the Mecha Mouse companion helps flesh out the Corvette-centered community expedition. And of course, the option to rebind controller buttons on console is a huge win for accessibility and quality of life. All in all, No Man's Sky's Voyagers update is one of the best expansions the game has had in a while, and well worth diving into.
