Summary

  • Fan remake of Oblivion as a DOOM clone captures classic charm.
  • While gamers can't play yet, the creator may make a playable level for others in the future.

A talented gamer online has created their own Oblivion "remake" that transforms Bethesda's RPG into a classic DOOM clone. While rumors continue to rumble about the possibility of an official Oblivion remake in the near future, one gamer has created one of their own.

The Elder Scrolls series has often been the focus of these kinds of amazing fan creations over the years. It helps keep the community alive, especially with the lack of mainline releases in the series for some time now. Sometimes, these creations are mods for the existing games in the Elder Scrolls series, while others are full-blown remakes. For example, Skyblivion is one notable example of this. A remake of Oblivion in the Skyrim engine, Skyblivion is set to release later this year, and is highly anticipated by fans of the series, cultivating a small fanbase of its own.

The Skyblivion team officially reacts to the recent leaks of the long-rumored remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

Another fan on Reddit named Sloth_Johnson has paid homage in their own unique way, remaking part of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion as if it were a DOOM clone. It has everything, from lower-quality audio of the nostalgic Oblivion music, to a hilarious sprite of the Adoring Fan who attempts to attack the player. There's even an Imperial Guard who shoots back at the player just like the undead soldiers from DOOM. It still manages to capture that classic Oblivion charm while also tapping into what makes boomer shooters so popular in the modern day.

This Oblivion "Remake" Resembles Classic Boomer Shooters

Unfortunately, gamers can't play this Oblivion remake at the moment, although Sloth_Johnson did say, "I'll see if I can cobble together a level," after they realized just how popular their creation was with online users. It's unclear how much of Oblivion they've actually made, but it's a fascinating fan project nonetheless, and it would certainly be interesting to see how other areas of the game would translate in this style. As one of the best RPGs ever made, it's fun to see how specific aspects of Oblivion translate to another genre.

Although its existence has not been officially confirmed by Bethesda, the recent leak of the official Oblivion remake has fans excited about what is seemingly to come. The long-rumored title could be set to give fans a new way to experience the land of Cyrodiil, 19 years after it made its debut in the original Oblivion. Although rumors should always be taken with a pinch of salt, the current prevailing rumor is that the game will shadow-drop sometime during the week beginning April 21.
