Bethesda took a risk when it shadow dropped The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, but it was a risk that paid off. Oblivion Remastered is gorgeous, yet it kept the features that made it so charming even after nearly 20 years. New players got a great reason to finally experience Oblivion for the first time, while longtime fans of the game could experience the game they love with new visuals.

Many of the enemies in Oblivion Remastered are daedra, which are particularly prolific throughout Oblivion's main questline and Shivering Isles; players can also summon them as allies by investing in Conjuration. Long-time fans of Oblivion are likely to notice that the daedra have received massive design overhauls, more so than some of the other creatures and enemies that only received a graphics upgrade. Rather than being creatures that could conceivably appear in a children's cartoon, the design and graphical changes to the daedra, as the main enemy type of Oblivion, make them far more intimidating than what they were before.

Oblivion Remastered's Visual Updates

Oblivion Remaster's visual updates include changes to the designs of the characters, creatures, and NPCs. Some of the NPC designs run the risk of leaning into the uncanny valley, particularly when it comes to their faces, but the changes are overall an improvement to the original Oblivion's designs. Some creatures in particular look far better in Oblivion Remastered than in the original, particularly the different varieties of daedra that can be encountered across the campaign.

What are the Daedra?

Daedra are the denizens of Oblivion, which include the ones that reside in Mehrunes Dagon's plane of the Deadlands and Sheogorath's plane of the Shivering Isles. The many varieties of lesser daedra are ruled by a Daedric Prince, the most powerful of the daedra and akin to the Nine Divines. Mehrunes Dagon's Deadlands are the region that is accessible via Oblivion gates, and are filled with hostile creatures.

Daedra is a vast term that encompasses all the inhabitants of Oblivion, and doesn't only refer to the Daedric Princes, who are very similar to the Nine Divines. There are numerous kinds of daedra that are encountered in Oblivion, including:

  • Dremora
  • Xivilai
  • Golden Saints
  • Dark Seducers
  • Aurorans
  • Flame, Frost, and Storm Atronachs
  • Daedroth
  • Clannfear

As players make frequent trips to the Deadlands via Oblivion gates, most of the varieties of daedra that are encountered in Oblivion serve Mehrunes Dagon, but the Golden Saints, Dark Seducers, and Aurorans are associated with Sheogorath and Meridia. Conjurers in Oblivion can summon most varieties of daedra to serve them.

Updating the Daedra For Oblivion Remastered

The new visual effects give Atronachs a massive upgrade in appearance, with their forms more agile and their elements more vibrant. The bestial and monstrous daedra, such as clannfear and daedroth, have improved details and, in some cases, a design overhaul. Even scamps, which are the weakest of the daedra encountered in Oblivion, now have more monstrous faces and legs are covered in fur.

As the daedric invasion from the Deadlands is the core of Oblivion' s main questline, it's important that the enemies from that questline embody the fear they are meant to inspire. Rather than looking silly, the daedra are now more closely aligned with what they represent and the Prince of Destruction's realm. The daedra in Shivering Isles also received design updates, with many of the monsters looking more disturbing than in the original Oblivion.
