The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was easily one of the biggest surprise hits of the last few months. Announced out of nowhere during a brief livestream on the Bethesda YouTube channel, the game was shadow-dropped on PC and current-gen consoles without any major marketing campaign. Despite its sudden release, Oblivion Remastered quickly climbed up the sales charts on platforms like Steam and PlayStation, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it managed to secure a spot among the best-selling games of 2025 so far. While Oblivion Remastered has been celebrated by fans for being a faithful take on the 2006 RPG that it's based on, its launch has unfortunately been far from perfect.
Oblivion Remastered may have brought Bethesda's Oblivion up to modern standards, but it preserved many of the bugs, technical issues, and general jank from the original game, and actually made it worse in some areas. Many gamers, even those using high-end computers, have reported encountering a lot of glitches and frame rate problems while playing Oblivion Remastered. In spite of these frequent complaints, however, the game has received almost no updates since its initial release. To this day, Oblivion Remastered's issues are still very present, and this is especially noticeable in one side quest that is notoriously buggy.
One of the Missions in the Fighters Guild Questline is Notoriously Buggy
In Oblivion Remastered, one of the many factions that players can choose to become a member of is the Fighters Guild. Run by a ruling family called the Dontons, this faction is largely comprised of mercenaries who regulate commerce, defeat beasts, slay enemies, and perform other security-related tasks. After joining the Fighters Guild, players can partake in a series of quests that are given by three of its members: the Redguard knight Azzan, the Orc barbarian Burz gro-Khash, and the Champion Modryn Oreyn.
Once they make a decent amount of progress through the Fighters Guild questline, Modryn Oreyn gives players a quest called Azani Blackheart. To initiate this quest, players have to meet up with Modryn at night to talk about the rival mercenary group, the Blackwood Company. Afterward, they need to explore two ruins with Modryn, defeat Azani Blackheart (the Redguard nightblade whom this quest is named after), and give Blackheart's ring back to Modryn. The quest seems simple in concept, but it's so prone to glitches that it's actually pretty difficult to complete.
The Azani Blackheart Quest Can Be Broken in Many Different Ways
The Azani Blackheart quest in Oblivion Remastered can easily be broken within just a few minutes of accepting it. If, for example, players fast travel to Arpenia — the first of two Ayleid ruins that they're tasked with exploring — instead of going there in other ways, Modryn can quickly get lost or outright despawn while attempting to accompany them on their journey. As if that wasn't bad enough, though, Modryn can also get stuck or knocked unconscious by some of the many traps that are hidden within Arpenia itself. Once they explore the ruins, players ultimately discover that there is nothing of significance in them, so they have to speak with Modryn to progress the quest's storyline. The problem is, however, that Modryn can only be interacted with at a very specific spot outside the ruins, making this task a tougher feat than it should be.
If players try to fast travel to Atatar without Modryn by their side, the body of Azani Blackheart may disappear after he is killed, thus rendering the quest uncompletable.
After exploring Arpenia, players must travel to the second of the two ruins, Atatar, to find and kill Azani Blackheart and take his ring. If players manage to loot the ring from Azani's body too quickly, Modryn does not ask for the ring anymore, and the quest becomes permanently glitched out. Likewise, if they accidentally pickpocket Modryn while playing through this quest, they are expelled from the Fighters Guild and are unable to progress without regaining the faction's trust. Given how susceptible it is to bugs, this Azani Blackheart mission is easily one of the most broken quests in not just Oblivion Remastered, but also the Elder Scrolls franchise as a whole.
While players can technically pickpocket Modryn after handing him Blackheart's ring and not suffer any consequences, they can only do so immediately after completing the quest. Otherwise, the ring can no longer be pickpocketed.
