This article contains spoilers for Oblivion Remastered
An Oblivion Remastered player accidentally barred themselves from completing the main quest by leaving Martin and Jauffre in the Bruma Mages Guild before its scripted destruction. What makes Oblivion Remastered such a beloved remake is that it follows the same philosophy behind Diablo 2: Resurrected. The original game runs underneath a graphical overhaul, effectively marrying the old charm with a new look.
While Virtuos made an effort to update some of the gameplay in Oblivion Remastered, it's a very accurate representation of the original experience from 2006. This effectively means that many old bugs and glitches are still present in the remake, even though most of them have been harmless or even charming. The same logic also applies to the numerous ways that a player can break a playthrough in Oblivion Remastered: if it worked in 2006, it will work in 2025.
Oblivion Remastered Player Saves the Emperor and Gets a Surprising Reaction
An Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered player manages to save the Emperor, but gets an unexpected reaction.
Different-Ticket2974 severed the threads of prophecy by leaving Martin and Jauffre in Bruma during the events of "Weynon Prior" while progressing through the Mages Guild. Namely, these essential characters in the main quest of Oblivion Remastered were left inside the Bruma Mages Guild, which gets destroyed after "A Plot Revealed" by necromancers. Different-Ticket2974 has made the decision to continue in their doomed world at their own peril, but also noted that they'd make a separate character to complete the main quest.
Oblivion Remastered Player Breaks Their Playthrough
The reason why this issue happens in Oblivion Remastered traces back to how the original treats the game world. Each interior or exterior segment is viewed as a separate cell. While these cells are usually interconnected, there are several interiors that get switched out as the game progresses. One such example is Bruma's Mages Guild. By leaving Martin and Jauffre in the old Mages Guild cell, they ended up disconnected from the rest of the game when the cell got switched out.
Though there are a few ways to fix this via console commands in Oblivion Remastered, the option is only available to PC players. Rather amusingly, a great stopping point for the main quest is after escorting Martin and Jauffre to Cloud Ruler Temple – a location that's a short walk away from Bruma. Therefore, Different-Ticket2974 could have avoided breaking their playthrough had they completed the final step of their escort. Ultimately, it's moments like this that make Oblivion into a timeless sandbox, as a new generation of players can now take a deep dive into a Bethesda classic.
