While 2025 has been filled to the brim with exciting game releases, one of the year's biggest surprises was no doubt the launch of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Once nothing more than a rumor, Bethesda shadow dropped it alongside its reveal in April, and veterans and newcomers alike were finally treated to a modernized version of one of the most iconic RPGs in gaming history. Oblivion Remastered is such an extensive overhaul of the 2006 classic, in fact, that some might call it a remake rather than merely a remaster.

Since its launch, that excitement has mostly died down, even if it didn't begin significantly diminishing until mid-May, per Oblivion Remastered's Steam Charts. To be fair, a trend like that is understandable for the game, because despite what it has done to modernize its mechanics, it is, at the end of the day, still technically only a remaster. As such, it still plays like an older game, despite feeling like a newer one. However, even though it has lost most of the wind once in its sails, Oblivion Remastered fans might not have to wait much longer for the next best thing: Skyblivion, an actual fan-made remake of the original Oblivion using none other than Skyrim's Creation Engine.

Skyblivion's Release Date Reveal May Be Just Around the Corner

Skyblivion Gets New Development Update

A 13-Year Journey Through Cyrodiil

Skyblivion, technically a gigantic mod, has been in the works since 2012 by the TES Renewal Project with nothing more than community volunteers and a vision. As it often does in game development, progress on Skyblivion has ebbed and flowed over the years, but it has never ceased, no doubt thanks to the passion of its developers. Even when Bethesda surprised fans with the launch of an official remaster of Oblivion, TES Renewal Project kept their eyes on the prize, with the end finally in sight.

A recent 15-minute gameplay showcase for Skyblivion revealed its revamped intro sequence, proving just how far the project has come since it began 13 years ago. The visuals are sharper, the dungeon layouts are more immersive, and the overall experience actually feels like a legitimate remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The team has even confirmed that post-launch content like bug fixes and DLC integrations for Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles are already on the table, so their work is far from over but much appreciated.

Skyblivion and Oblivion Remastered Can Coexist

At the moment, Skyblivion's developer has only confirmed that the mod will launch sometime in 2025, but with the year quickly coming to a close, anticipation is only increasing for the game to finally receive a firm release date. As it turns out, Skyblivion's release date is actually "closer to a potential date announcement," according to Skyblivion project lead Kyle 'Rebelzize' Rebel in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun. Again, given how little of 2025 there is left, that release date announcement is likely right around the corner.

The timing of Skyblivion's release has inevitably drawn comparisons to Bethesda's own Oblivion Remastered, but instead of viewing it as competition, TES Renewal Project has embraced the remaster, saying both projects can coexist. For fans, that means more options to revisit Cyrodiil, whether through an official or fan-made modern Oblivion experience. Bethesda has even shown goodwill towards the Skyblivion team by gifting them copies of the remaster. In light of that relationship, there's no reason Oblivion Remastered and Skyblivion shouldn't be able to thrive alongside one another, even if they are released in the same year.
