The developers of Skyblivion, a fan-created mod aiming to recreate The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion within the engine and mechanics of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, released a new trailer showing off the team's latest progress on the project. The mod's target release window is 2025, and though it will require Skyrim to play, the mod itself will be free of charge.

Originally conceived in 2012 as a project to port Oblivion content into the more advanced Skyrim engine, Skyblivion has evolved over time into a full "remaster" of the original game. Now, the mod will update Oblivion's content and systems and adapt them to Skyrim's, so that players used to Skyrim can play and enjoy Oblivion, the game that helped popularize The Elder Scrolls franchise. If successful, Skyblivion could be one of the largest and most comprehensive Skyrim mods ever made.

The latest gameplay trailer for Skyblivion seems to underscore the scale and scope of the team's efforts, showing off a player completing two notable quests from the base game: "Fingers of the Mountain," which rewards a unique spell, and "The Killing Field," which awards players with a unique Oblivion sword.

Skyblivion Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Quests and Gameplay Enhancements

The latest Skyblivion gameplay trailer runs almost 20 minutes, showing off the current state of the project. It shows off two quests based in Chorrol, a city in the heavily forested northwest of the Oblivion province of Cyrodiil and a popular early-game destination. The footage shows off how Chorrol and its environs were remastered to suit the greater graphical capabilities of Skyrim. It also includes dialog scenes and user interface elements derived from Skyrim's changes to the older Oblivion UI.

The first quest covered in the Skyblivion gameplay trailer is "Fingers of the Mountain," which forms part of the Oblivion Mages Guild quest line. Players are shown visiting a mountaintop ruin at the behest of the Chorrol Mages Guild, in search of a special book. The footage of the quest in action shows off the game's combat, which incorporates Skyrim- exclusive combat features like enhanced melee blocking and counterattacks, cinematic kills, and even the ability to dual-wield magic and weapons. As a result, the player is able to wield the unique Finger of the Mountain spell in their left hand while holding a weapon in their right. The Skyblivion trailer also demonstrates enhanced reactivity over Obilivion in the second quest, "The Killing Field." In the remastered version, the quest location - a farm the player helps defend from goblins - will change depending on which of several outcomes players earn while accomplishing the quest.

Though Skyblivion is still a ways off from its 2025 target release window, it's already shaping up to be an impressive recreation of one of the most beloved RPGs of all time. If development goes well, fans of The Elder Scrolls should have plenty to look forward to in the absence of more details from The Elder Scrolls 6.
