This article contains SPOILERS for Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2 added a big new postgame feature, Extra Battles, in its official PlayStation and Xbox release on June 6. This serves as a new incentive for players to rediscover Octopath Traveler 2, one of the most highly acclaimed turn-based JRPGs from recent years.

According to the release notes on Steam for Octopath Traveler 2, players can access Extra Battles once they finish the game. The mode, which can be accessed from the title screen, is comprised of three new boss fights meant to challenge the player after they wrap up the main story. For those who are familiar with the first game, two of the battles are interesting callbacks, as they feature characters from the original Octopath Traveler.

Japanese media giant Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, turns Octopath Traveler co-developer Acquire into a subsidiary.

The first fight in the Extra Battles mode is against Octopath Traveler protagonists Olberic, Tressa, Ophilia, and Alphyn, followed by the other four main characters Therion, Primrose, H'aanit, and Cyrus. The final fight is an entity called True Vide, which is an extra strong version of the final boss in Octopath Traveler 2. These battles exist outside of the game's map.

Fighting Familiar Faces In Octopath Traveler 2's Extra Battles

  • Battle 1: Olberic, Tressa, Ophilia, Alphyn
  • Battle 2: Therion, Primrose, H'aanit, Cyrus
  • Battle 3: True Vide

The release of both Octopath Traveler games on PlayStation and Xbox, which made them now available for all current platforms, was very much unexpected. It seemed as though Square Enix was filling the gaps in the series' availability; Octopath Traveler 2 was already available for PS4 and PS5 in its initial release, but not Xbox. On the other hand, the first Octopath Traveler wasn't available for PlayStation until now, whereas it was already available for Switch, PC, and Xbox.

For Octopath Traveler fans looking for a new adventure, it's looking like they'll be returning to the universe of similar title Bravely Default, which is also from Team Asano. Rumors claim that Team Asano is working on a sequel to one of its titles, which may be Bravely Default, as speculation of Octopath Traveler 3 was already shot down by leakers.
