The success of Octopath Traveler following its 2018 release ushered in a resurgence of 2D RPGs from Square Enix with the developer doubling down on new and classic role-players. Square Enix has since released fully remastered versions of the original six Final Fantasy games with the Pixel Remaster series alongside the "HD-2D" series receiving its newest entry with Triangle Strategy in March. But despite Octopath's success and recognition at awards shows, Square Enix has yet to announce a proper sequel.
Octopath Traveler's story did not end with the original RPG, however, as 2020 saw the Japanese release of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent as a free-to-play mobile game. Rather than serving as a direct follow-up to Octopath, Champions of the Continent plays out as a prequel telling the story of three new characters within the world of Osterra. With Square Enix confirming a Western release for Champions of the Continent earlier this year, the newest update from the developer officially announces the opening of pre-registrations for the game.
A new trailer for Champions of the Continent released Wednesday morning reveals Octopath Traveler fans can now pre-register for the mobile game on both the App Store and Google Play Store. The short video re-introduces players to Octopath's gorgeous 2D artstyle while giving a glimpse into the mobile-optimized UI in the game, promising a "console experience optimized for Mobile." The trailer also teases the game's worldwide release window with Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent set to launch in Summer 2022.
The mobile-optimized version comes as Square Enix has placed a heavy focus on bringing more of its franchises to mobile devices. The previously mentioned Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster saw all of its releases come to both PC and mobile devices at launch. Kingdom Hearts has also seen multiple mobile releases throughout its history with Square Enix announcing Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link earlier this year. Square Enix's upcoming remaster of Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song was also confirmed for mobile devices.
While Octopath Traveler has yet to receive a true sequel, the game's success has led to Square Enix officially adopting its HD-2D style for several recent and upcoming games. Alongside the recently released Triangle Strategy, Square Enix has confirmed that the Live A Live remake releasing next month will share Octopath's iconic visual style. Square Enix also announced that Dragon Quest 3 would receive a remaster in the same HD-2D aesthetic. Despite not being a direct follow-up, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will offer fans another look into the world of Osterra.
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will release in Summer 2022 for Android and iOS.
