Summary
- Many Once Human players are unhappy with the game's high prices.
- Some users call the monetization scheme predatory.
- There are alternate ways to obtain cosmetics in the game though.
Once Human players are voicing their discontent over the high price tag for buying cosmetics in the game. The post-apocalyptic survival title launched last year to mostly positive reviews from fans and critics alike. Once Human is known for its diverse dystopian landscapes in which an alien substance called Stardust has mutated lifeforms into hostile creatures. However, the free-to-play game is now facing criticism from some players about the steep cost of purchasing cosmetics.
Recently, the game has been ramping up updates, likely in part to prepare for the April 23 mobile release of Once Human. To celebrate the mobile version, the game's developer, Starry Studio, handed out plenty of prizes to a few lucky players, including Steam gift cards, AirPods, and an iPhone 16. But even with the title’s expanded reach and bounty of gifts, some players are still not happy with how much it costs to load up on cosmetics for use in Once Human's hazardous environments.
Once Human Teases Dog Companions
Starry Studio, the developer behind the post-apocalyptic survival game Once Human, reveals that players will soon be getting dog companions.
A Reddit user who goes by jimwas1 recently shared a post expressing frustration with the price of cosmetics in Once Human. The player mentions that they wanted to get their hands on the Tron Light Cycle, but purchasing it would cost 15 gems, which translates to roughly $500 in real money. The user also explains that they eventually spent around $110 on loot crates, which included three Lightforge Gems, 87 relics, some skins for water pumps, and a barrel. They lamented the high cost of the skins and crates, as well as the fact that what players receive in a loot crate is unknown until the purchase is made.
Once Human Players Frustrated by the High Price of Cosmetics
Many commenters echoed the player's sentiment about overpricing, with some claiming it has become even more predatory recently, while others shared their unhappiness with the unpredictable nature of loot crates in terms of what players get. Once Human is free to play, but players can also buy cosmetic items like skins and outfits in the game.
While cosmetics can be purchased, there are other ways to obtain cosmetic items in the game without spending hard-earned cash. Cosmetic Tokens in Once Human can be earned when players receive duplicate skins they already own. Additionally, players can get Cosmetic Tokens from Butterfly's Emissary loot crates purchased with Mitsuko's Marks, which are earned by completing Seasonal Goals. They can also unlock cosmetics by working their way through the Season Pass.
On top of Cosmetic Tokens, players can also collect Starchrom in Once Human to access items like cosmetics and weapons. Starchrom is a special currency in the game and is directly tied to the Wish Machine, a Function Facility within a player's territory that offers plenty of rewards. However, to guarantee the best cosmetics, purchasing them remains the only surefire way, and for many, the price is simply too high.
