Since the introduction of a being known as “The Great Imu” back in the Levely Arc of One Piece, Imu has been the looming threat behind every major catastrophe in the story, especially those involving the World Government and the Marines. There have been a few occasions when she's used her power and authority, such as when she destroyed the Lulusia Kingdom or when she sent Saint Jaygarcia Saturn to Egghead Island. However, for the most part, fans haven’t yet seen her true power.
One Piece: God’s Knights' Unique Powers & Abilities, Ranked
From immortality to teleportation, these are some of the unbelievable things that the God’s Knights can do in One Piece.
At least that was the case before Chapter 1150 came along. In this chapter, Imu displayed some of her powers. She didn’t show everything she had, but just enough to do what needed to be done, and it was terrifying. Her powers are unlike anything seen in the series up to that point. It’s unclear whether her powers are based on a Devil Fruit or some unknown ancient source that has been forgotten. With that in mind, here is every power and ability that Imu has shown so far in One Piece. This list also pairs each of her powers with a similar devil fruit ability, highlighting just how varied and versatile her abilities are.
Spoilers Ahead for Chapter 1150 of the One Piece manga.
7 Full Possession
Taking Over Her Follower’s Body
- Character’s Name: Donquixote Doflamingo
- First Appearance: Episode 151
Like every other God’s Knight in the Holy Land, Gunko received blessings from the great Imu in the form of unique powers and abilities, such as immortality. In exchange for that power, however, Imu gets to possess her body and turn it into a temporary vessel for her soul. This means Imu can take over Gunko, or any other God’s Knight for that matter, whenever and wherever she wants.
While there is no exact replica of this unique ability, there are some Devil Fruits that allow their users to control other people’s bodies. Doflamingo can use his String-String Fruit to turn other people into his puppet. Once his strings latch onto a target, he can control their every movement. At one point, he even manipulated the entire Royal Guard of Dressrosa into slaughtering their own people.
6 Body Transformation
Morphing Into A Demon
- Character’s Name: Magellan
- First Appearance: Episode 425
The most notable change that happens to Gunko when Imu takes over her body is a drastic physical transformation. She grows a pair of large, bat-like wings on her back, sprouts a long, thick tail out of her lower back, and a jet-black trident to complete the whole demon look. The giants that Imu turned into demons also share a similar appearance, featuring visible large fangs and long horns that may not be apparent in Gunko due to her mask and hat.
One Piece features a lot of different races in the story, but demons are not one of them; at least not in the modern world. As such, there’s a possibility that Imu is part of an ancient devil race that no longer exists. There is, however, somebody who looks eerily similar to Imu’s devil form: Magellan, the former warden of the Impel Down prison who nearly killed Luffy with his poison power. Just like Imu’s demon appearance, Magellan also has a pair of bat-like wings, horns, and fangs. It’s unclear if this is merely a coincidence or if Magellan is a descendant of this long-lost race, but the resemblance is clearly there.
5 Extreme Conqueror's Haki
Strong Enough To Knock Out Giant Warriors
- Character’s Name: “Red-Haired” Shanks
- First Appearance: Episode 4
Conqueror’s Haki has proven to be one of the most effective and fearsome abilities in the New World. Needless to say, the Great Imu also possesses a Conqueror’s Haki, and not just a regular Conqueror’s Haki either. The moment Imu possesses Gunko’s body, an explosion of Extreme Conqueror’s Haki envelops a wide area and manages to knock down quite a few Giant warriors. That’s how powerful her haki turned out to be.
One Piece: Every Race Depicted In The Elbaf Ancient Mural
From the Longarm Tribe to the Ancient Giants, here are some of the races depicted in the Ancient Mural of Elbaf in One Piece.
There have been quite a few formidable wielders of Conqueror’s Haki in the series, most of whom come from the older generation, such as Scopper Gaban and Garp. The one who arguably has the most powerful Conqueror’s Haki for this generation of pirates has to be the “Red-Haired” Shanks. He can emit a Conqueror’s Haki strong enough to scare Aramaki, one of the three Admirals of the Marines, at the end of the Wano Country arc. Could Shanks take down multiple powerful Giant warriors with his Haki, like Imu just did in Elbaf? It's hard to say, but hopefully, fans will see him pull off a feat like that soon.
4 Weapon Manifestation
Making A Pistol Out Of Thin Air
- Character’s Name: Baby 5
- First Appearance: Episode 608
One of the most fascinating abilities that Imu uses when she possesses Gunko’s body is Weapon Manifestation. When the angry Brogy, the co-captain of the legendary Giant Warrior Pirates, grabs hold of Imu, she immediately creates a dagger and a giant pistol out of thin air. She frees herself by stabbing Brogy’s grasp, then uses the giant pistol to blast his hand off.
There are quite a few characters that can create weapons with their Devil Fruit powers. Kizaru can make a long sword made out of light, Aokiji can make an ice sword, and Mr. 3 can make various tools and weapons out of wax. However, the one who can make complex weapons like Imu is Baby 5 and her Arms-Arms Fruit. The difference between the two is that Imu creates weapons out of thin air, while Baby 5 transforms any part of her body into a cannon, a sword, a machine gun, or any type of weapon she wants.
3 Teleportation
Instant Long-Distance Travel
- Character’s Name: Blueno
- First Appearance: Episode 230
One of Imu’s unique powers that she often uses, and also shares with her God’s Knights, is long-range teleportation. She can use it to teleport an entire squad, and she can also use it to transport something as small as weapons or a grimoire. Although both Imu and the God’s Knights require a magic circle to serve as a gate to teleport to their destination, Imu can create her magic circle much faster than the God’s Knights. Not only that, she can also create the magic circle in mid-air, as opposed to the God’s Knights, who have to draw it on the ground.
Out of every Devil Fruit user in One Piece, the one who possesses a similar ability is Blueno. He was a CP9 agent who, along with Rob Lucci and the others, was later promoted to CP0. His Devil Fruit enables him to create doors on any surface, including in the air itself. He can connect these doors to any place he wants. Blueno has shown that he can use his doors to cross miles of distance instantly, but it’s unclear whether he can use them to travel from one country to the next, like Imu’s teleportation circle.
2 Demonic Contract
A Contract That Turns You Into A Demon
- Character’s Name: Sugar
- First Appearance: Episode 608
As the name suggests, Demon Contract allows Imu to create a contract with another person and turn them into a demon, complete with body transformation like wings, fangs, and horns. She also turns them into an immortal murder machine that will follow her instructions no matter how absurd they may be. However, the scariest part about this ability is the fact that Imu doesn’t need consent from the other party to form the demon contract. She can decide on her own to form a contract with somebody, and that person has no say in the matter.
One Piece: 7 Strongest Disbanded Crews, Ranked
These One Piece pirate crews may no longer exist, but their strength in their prime was undeniable.
The Devil Fruit that most closely resembles this one-sided, transformative contract is Sugar’s Hobby-Hobby Fruit. With her Devil Fruit power, Sugar has transformed countless citizens of Dressrosa into living toys. Upon transformation, Sugar forced a contract on her victims so that they would follow every word she said, or any other rules that she wanted to enforce on them.
1 Mind Control
Infiltrating Her Target’s Mind
- Character’s Name: Breed
- First Appearance: Episode 625
As mentioned earlier, the moment Imu activates her Demon Contract, she gains full control of her target. She can transform their body into an immortal demon, but more importantly, she also has total control over their mind. This is how she can make people like Dorry and Brogy, the proud co-captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates, turn on their own people and be ready to kill their elders.
There are quite a few Devil Fruits that can control other people’s bodies, but no Devil Fruit can fully control their minds. The closest one has to be Pudding’s Memo-Memo Fruit, which allows her to manipulate other people’s memories. There is, however, a Devil Fruit that has a similar ability to Imu’s mind control once, but it's only found beyond the canon storylines.
The name of the character is Breed; he is the main antagonist of the Caesar Retrieval Arc, and his Devil Fruit is called the Pet-Pet Fruit. This is an anime-only filler arc that takes place between the Punk Hazard arc and the Dressrosa arc. Breed’s Devil Fruit allows him to create a collar that can give him full control over the mind and body of anybody who wears it, just like a pet. While he can’t turn them into powerful monsters like Imu’s Demon Contract, the mind-control effect is pretty much the same.
