Overall, Luffy is an amazing protagonist who is both strong and interesting. To many, he is the ideal lead, but there are certain characters who are just as good as Luffy, if not better. With that in mind, here are all the anime MCs who are better than Monkey D. Luffy.

8 Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto Uzumaki is the lead character of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto. While his story concluded years ago, Naruto is still as popular among anime fans. He is a character with whom viewers can relate to on a personal level. Naruto had to endure a lot of hardships, but he kept on fighting until the end.

Despite being born in a world where power held precedence, Naruto proved that he could bring peace with his words. He talked to his enemies in hopes of reaching an agreement before engaging in an all-out battle. The combination of his personality and powers makes Naruto superior to Luffy as a protagonist.

7 Frieren

Frieren is the titular lead for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. As an elf, she lives longer than humans, and years of traveling have granted her a great deal of experience. Frieren has mastered all kinds of magical techniques, which range from potent spells to kill demons to goofy spells to see beneath one's clothes.

What makes Frieren better than Luffy is her unique outlook. Having spent more than 10 centuries learning, Frieren is aware of how the world works, which is why she almost always makes the right decision. Also, Frieren is also more gifted than Luffy.

6 Guts

Guts is one of the most recognizable anime characters. As a human being in a world full of monsters, Guts has had to work hard to survive. He trained for years with the Dragon Slayer; otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to wield it in combat. Upon mastering the blade, he became capable of fighting all sorts of enemies.

While Guts' amazing physical strength is worth fawning over, Guts' growth as a person is just as brilliant. He went through a lot of difficult times, yet he didn't give up and kept going. Guts' journey is motivating and serves as a reminder that things get better eventually.

5 Edward Elric

Edward Elric is the main character of Fullmetal Alchemist, which is among the most critically acclaimed anime of all time. After losing their mother, Edward and Alphonse made a grave mistake that affected their lives for years. Since Edward was the older one, he shouldered most of the burden.

Edward Elric is better than Luffy in the sense that the former relies more on his wits to beat his enemies. Neither does Edward need some kind of power-up to overcome an adversary.

4 Sakata Gintoki

Sakata Gintoki is widely believed to be the best protagonist of all time. After watching just a few episodes of Gintama, it becomes clear that Gintoki is not an ordinary protagonist. As the lead, he obviously has a great deal of strength, but that's not what makes him such an amazing MC.

Gintoki is older than most shonen protagonists, so he has a certain degree of maturity. One minute he can be outrageous, and the next he can be imparting wisdom. He has a way with words, and most of the time, he actually gives good advice.

3 Thorfinn

In a world dominated by strong protagonists, it is nearly impossible for someone like Thorfinn to stand out, and yet he somehow does. In the early stages of his life, Thorfinn was hellbent on avenging his father, which blinded him to everything else. So, when he lost the opportunity to get rid of his father's killer, everything fell apart.

However, Thorfinn did well to get back on his feet and abandon his old ways. Thorfinn's character teaches the audience the valuable lesson that violence is not always the way.

2 Onizuka

Onizuka is an exceptional character who has stayed relevant for decades after the conclusion of his anime. He has no superpowers, and yet he is universally adored by the masses because of his perseverance.

Due to being an outcast, Onizuka is aware of the struggles of people who are in similar situations. Throughout the anime, Onizuka helps other individuals to overcome their personal battles.

1 Jotaro Kujo

Jotaro Kujo is among the few characters in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure who appear in multiple parts. Funnily, if one were to consider Jotaro from Part 3, he wouldn't make the list because that particular version is one-dimensional.

Thankfully, Jotaro grew as a character in the subsequent parts. He showed more compassion towards other people, helping them whenever possible. In the sixth part, Jotaro showed his fatherly side, which made him a more interesting character.
