This article contains spoilers from One Piece's Elbaf Arc.

One Piece's Final Saga has introduced the fans to a plethora of new abilities that they weren't even aware existed in the world and the most intriguing of them all is immortality. The concept of immortality has existed in the One Piece world since the Ope Ope no Mi was properly explained. However, that immortality and the one that's displayed in the final saga are very different. One Piece's Final Saga introduced the fans to Saint Saturn and the Elders properly, and all of them seem to possess a unique, undying body, thanks to the powers bestowed by Imu.

In the Elbaf arc, fans saw this power once again, and it was quite clear to see that the Holy Knights possessed this power as well. The true counter to immortality was shown when Scopper Gaban beat Saint Sommers, but it wasn't explained to the fans until now. In One Piece chapter 1165, Oda finally went on to reveal the main way to counter powers such as Immortality of the Holt Knights, Five Elders, and those turned with Domi Reversi, and it all comes down to controlling the mass of Haki used on them.

The Holy Knights and Five Elders' Immortality Can Be Countered With Haki Of Higher Mass

Both the groups of the Holy Knights and the Five Elders possess the power of immortality. However, they may possess it differently. For instance, the Holy Knights clearly seem to possess aging bodies, but the Five Elders stopped aging hundreds of years ago. That aside, the core of their powers is the same.

I shall grant thee immense strength and an undying body. — Imu to Dorry and Brogy

All of these characters are using Imu's abilities to regenerate infinitely as they basically tank all attacks easily. On Egghead, Luffy tried everything in his arsenal on the Elders but couldn't even scratch them. In Elbaf, Gaban was clearly able to counter the immortality of the Holy Knights.

As revealed by Gaban, the key to damaging them permanently isn't to keep in mind how to use Haki. Haki may be the counter, but it needs to be used in a certain way to get past the immortality, and now, Oda has shown the fans exactly how that's done. In One Piece chapter 1165, Oda showed the fans how Roger and Garp got past the Haki barrier of Rocks D. Xebec. The key to breaking past the incredible buff given to him by Domi Reversi was to use Haki with higher mass. In simple words, the strongest form of Haki with a very high concentration must be used to get past the immortality and the Haki barriers of the enemies, and this can only be achieved by learning to control the mass of Haki. That's exactly what Roger and Garp did, and eventually, they beat Domi Reversi'd Rocks.

Mass Control Is Essential To Master Haki

To beat the Holy Knights and the Five Elders, one needs to master Haki properly. Conqueror's Haki is essential to get past the powers of Domi Reversi, as well as the Abyssal powers of the Holy Knights and the Five Elders. But, regular Conqueror's Haki Infusion isn't enough to get the job done. One needs to learn to channel higher amounts of Conqueror's Haki and increase the efficiency of their attacks to get past immortality.

It's all about the mass, Garp. Our Haki needs more mass. — Roger to Garp, One Piece chapter 1165

The more mass behind the Haki, the easier it is to damage the Holy Knights, and the highest and strongest level of Haki will essentially counter Imu's immortality which the Holy Knights and Five Elders use. Luffy and the crew must learn this power of mass control to be able to get past immortality.

Once the Elbaf arc goes back to the battle in the Sun World, fans will most definitely get the chance to see Luffy and the others use their Haki at a very high level. Learning to tap into Conqueror's Haki and increasing its mass will allow Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Loki to get past the immortality of the Holy Knights and deal permanent damage to them. It will also allow them to hurt those with undying bodies after Domi Reversi, such as Dorry and Brogy.

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece will be on break next week. One Piece Chapter 1166 will be out in two weeks. The official release date of One Piece Chapter 1166 is November 23, 2025. Fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus.
