This article discusses the friendship of Davy D. Xebec and King Harald of Elbaf.

For all the credit that Oda deservedly gets for his unparalleled worldbuilding, one of the greatest aspects of his writing in One Piece is his characters. The series has introduced over 1500 unique characters with distinct personalities and diverse backgrounds, truly making its world feel real and lived-in. Even here, one of the best things to see is the relationship that these characters have with one another.

These dynamics are easily some of the most engaging parts of One Piece. As such, most fans believe that the greatest friendship in the entire story is none other than Luffy and Zoro, who are the oldest and most important members of the Straw Hat Pirates. However, the Elbaf arc recently introduced a new duo whose dynamic is just as captivating but far more tragic, so let's see who has the greatest friendship in all of One Piece.

Oftentimes, the thing that sticks with an audience of a story doesn't necessarily have to be something that they've seen the most of. For many, Luffy and Zoro's relationship perfectly encapsulates the essence of both of their character arcs and all that they have been through, with Luffy acting as the means by which Zoro and the remaining Straw Hats achieve their dreams by helping their captain achieve his.

Luffy and Zoro have worked together in some of the most pivotal moments in the series, fighting side by side against some of the most powerful forces on the Grand Line. Other than that, their dynamic within the crew is also incredible, with Luffy being the captain but Zoro undeniably being the strong and resilient backbone of the crew that even Luffy must often fall back on. Their personalities contrast very well, since Luffy can often be brash and impulsive, which often causes Zoro to step in to make the hard decisions that his captain can't.

Luffy and Zoro set sail - One Piece

This is undoubtedly an amazing character dynamic, but the one shared between Davy D. Xebec and King Harald of Elbaf can definitely give it a run for its money. Of course, there is a bias among fans, since they have only spent a few chapters exploring the relationship of Xebec and Harald, whereas they have seen Luffy and Zoro for the entire length of the story, but this honestly just speaks in favor of how captivating this flashback duo really is. In the span of merely seven chapters, Oda has shown one of the most poignant and tragic friendships in all of One Piece.

When they first met, Xebec and Harald actually clashed. However, upon seeing the otherworldly strength of one another's Conqueror's Haki, they immediately formed an underlying tone of respect. Eventually, Xebec made his way to Elbaf upon escaping Marijoa, where he would hound Harald into joining his crew and his cause, an offer that Harald always hilariously rejected. However, this never deterred Xebec, who began to consider Harald a dear friend of his, even proceeding to beat Kaido down when the young pirate spoke ill of him.

Harald's my good pal! I'll crush you if you say that crap again, Kaido!

This showed that, despite his infamy, Xebec respected Harald above all others and only wanted him to join his crew of his own volition rather than by forcing him. All of this is contrasted with Harald himself, who expressed his annoyance at Xebec's persistence and always scoffed at him. However, though he would never admit it, Harald also considered Xebec a close friend, as evidenced by him spilling his secrets and troubles to Xebec in Ida's tavern.

Ultimately, their friendship met a supposed end when the World Government ordered the king to kill his friend if he wanted Elbaf to come under their fold. This led to one of the greatest fights in the old era, with the eventual result being a stalemate between these legendary figures. The last time they would meet would also be with Harald being sent to stop the Rocks Pirates from going to God Valley, where Xebec would meet with the king and entrust him with his greatest secret; his family and true lineage. Here, Harald pretended to lose a battle against his old friend, providing Xebec with the perfect cover to escape the area.

Why This Friendship Is So Captivating And Tragic At The Same Time

An Incredible Dynamic

Featured One Piece: The Only Character To Stop Rocks Has Been Revealed, & It's Not Roger Harald
  • A sad turn of events.

The main reason why this friendship goes down as one of the saddest in the entire story is because of how the events surrounding Xebec and Harald's fates played out. At the moment, God Valley is considered the place where Xebec perished, with his last meeting with Harald being quite a bittersweet one, showing that these two friends were at opposite ends of the world when this happened.

To make matters even sadder, a new theory states that Xebec and Harald died very similarly. With the Elbaf flashback, it was revealed that while Xebec and Roger had a competitive rivalry, they didn't outright hate each other as was previously believed, and that they went to God Valley for similarly noble reasons. Many fans now believe that Imu once again possessed Gunko on the island and used their Domi Reversi on Rocks, making him infinitely more powerful and forcing Roger and Garp to team up to defeat him. This is how many believe that Harald died as well, ending their relationship on an incredibly tragic note.
