The crew has successfully taken advantage of various situations and achieved their goals at the expense of others. Something similar happened in the Egghead Island arc, where Catarina Devon and Van Augur made the most of the chaos caused by Luffy and his crew.
With the help of Van Augur's Devil Fruit ability, Devon was able to get close to Saturn and touch him with her hand. Portgas D. Ace was one of the most famous pirates in the world. He served as the Second Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. He considered himself responsible for everyone in his division, so when Blackbeard killed Thatch, he decided to pursue him. Ace's search led him to many different places, and he eventually found his former subordinate on Banaro Island.
Before the fight commenced, Blackbeard offered Ace a position within his pirate crew. He was also kind enough to tell Ace about his plan to capture Monkey D. Luffy and hand them over to the World Government. Obviously, Ace rejected the offer, and the fight between the two started. Initially, Ace had the momentum, but it didn't take long for Blackbeard to change things with the help of his Yami Yami no Mi. As a result, Ace was captured and handed over to the Marines. This ensured that Blackbeard would become a Shichibukai.
