This list contains spoilers!
While some characters in One Piece are able to eat a Devil Fruit and then continue on with their day, many will have their lives completely turned upside down after acquiring a new ability. In all honesty though, the extent to which the fruit can actually impact the host depends on the severity of the ability itself, since it's one thing to be able to throw out a fireball or two, but it's another to have a fruit that can warp someone's mind, or completely change their view of the world.
One Piece: 8 Most Selfless Devil Fruits, Ranked
Rather than enhancing the user, these Devil Fruits in One Piece are designed to help out others in times of crisis.
On the other hand, considering that many Devil Fruits are known to be absurdly powerful, acquiring one can also help someone either become a better version of themselves, or turn into a vicious monster who is simply concerned with reigning terror and chaos wherever they go. Needless to say, Devil Fruits can end up completely changing a person's life, and while this has happened to numerous individuals, it mostly relates to these One Piece characters listed below.
SMILE Fruit
Killer Was Forced To Break Out Of His Shell After Being Force-Fed A SMILE Fruit
- User: Killer
- Type: Defective
For most of the story, Killer, the right-hand man of Eustass Kid, is presented as a silent mercenary whose most distinguishable feature is the mask that can always be seen covering his face. For a while, Killer refused to speak to anyone other than his captain, making him one of the most mysterious characters in the entire series, but this Facade would be completely shattered after he was kidnapped by Orochi's goons and forced to eat an artificial SMILE Devil Fruit to save the rest of his crew.
Due to the side effects of the fruit, Killer was forced to laugh uncontrollably, to the point where tears would start pouring out of his eyes due to the embarrassment. Though he didn't eat the fruit voluntarily, everyone's views on Killer would suddenly change after this horrific incident, as he could no longer could keep up the stoic and brooding persona due to his constant laughing, completely changing not only the way people see him, but also how he sees himself in the process.
Paw Paw Fruit
Kuma Becomes A Man Of The People Who Is Able To Save Lives With His Ability
- User: Kuma
- Type: Paramecia
Kuma has been an important character in the One Piece story for quite a while now, but it wasn't until Egghead Island that fans finally got to see his full backstory, and to call it a tearjerker would be putting it mildly. While the flashback is fairly lengthy, one of the most important scenes is when Kuma finds himself face-to-face with a Devil Fruit after the Rocks pirates arrive at God Valley to cause some carnage. Consuming the Paw Paw fruit allowed Kuma to literally and physically push out the pain of anyone that he touched, which allowed him to become a healer to the residents of Sorbet Kingdom after he grew a little older.
One Piece: 39 Strongest Characters In The Series
These are the strongest characters to sail the seas of the One Piece world.
As a result, the fruit fed into Kuma's selfless nature by giving him the opportunity to truly help others from their pain, even though he would have to consume this pain for himself. Not only that, the fruit also gave Kuma the opportunity to split the Straw Hats up on Sabaody so that he could encourage them to train and protect the world from being destroyed, allowing him to become a true savior before eventually having his free will removed.
Human Human Fruit
Chopper Becomes A Doctor After Acquiring Human-Like Intelligence
- User: Chopper
- Type: Zoan
In all honesty, Luffy is the kind of guy who probably wouldn't mind having an actual reindeer wandering around the Sunny, but whether this would go down well with the rest of the crew is questionable. Thankfully for Chopper, he was able to eat the Human Human fruit, which has granted him enhanced intelligence to the point where he has become a fully-fledged doctor who has saved the Straw Hats' backsides on more than a few occasions.
If Chopper had never consumed this fruit, he would most likely still be stuck on Drum Island to mingle with the other reindeer, so it's ultimately this unique ability which gave him the opportunity to join the crew and start his grand adventure. There may be moments where Chopper wishes he was a little taller or more human-like, but he still owes a lot to this fruit for enabling him to become much more than just another animal.
String String Fruit
After A Troubled Childhood, Doflamingo Found The Power He Needed To Destroy The World
- User: Doflamingo
- Type: Paramecia
Initially, Doflamingo's seething hatred for the world and everyone in it can make him seem like a villain who has simply lost his mind, and while that's still certainly the case, there's a good reason why he became such a monster. Despite being born as a prestigious Celestial Dragon, Doflamingo's father made the decision to have the family live among the common folk in an attempt to connect with the people. Things would get very ugly though once the villagers turned on them, stringing up the family and almost burning them at the stake for their societal status.
This event traumatized Doflamingo and convinced him that nobody could be trusted, but considering he was still a child at this point, he didn't have the means to actually get revenge on the people who turned on him; that is, until he was offered a Devil Fruit by Trebol. The String String fruit is more than capable of cutting down anyone who gets in Doflamingo's way, and it enabled him to not only become a Warlord, but also the ruler of the island of Dressrosa.
Dark Dark Fruit
Blackbeard's Rise To Infamy All Started With The Dark Dark Fruit
- User: Blackbeard
- Type: Logia
Though Blackbeard's backstory is still largely shrouded in mystery, what has been made clear is that he wasn't all that much of a fighter when he was still a youngster on Whitebeard's crew. While he may have been able to hold his own in a small brawl, it wouldn't be until he laid eyes on the infamous Dark Dark fruit that Blackbeard's journey to becoming a powerful pirate truly began. This fruit was so appealing that it caused Blackbeard to not only betray his own crew, but also to defeat his own crewmate, Ace, who he would then turn into the Marines.
One Piece: 5 Questions About Devil Fruits That Have Yet To Be Answered
Devil fruits are one of the greatest mysteries in One Piece, and they grant their users incredible abilities while taking away their ability to swim.
The fruit is also what has allowed Blackbeard to become such a massive target for the Marines, considering that he was able to use his darkness to eventually consume a second Devil Fruit, which shouldn't even have been possible in the first place. Blackbeard has had one hell of a journey so far, and it can all be traced back to this evil Devil Fruit ability.
Human Human Fruit, Model: Nika
The Fruit Luffy Needed To Become Not Only A Pirate, But A Liberator
- User: Luffy
- Type: Zoan
Despite Luffy always wanting to become a pirate, it's unlikely he would have gotten very far if he hadn't consumed a Devil Fruit at the beginning of the story. After all, Luffy heavily relies on his elastic body to amplify his attacks, which is why he was able to take down such strong opponents such as Arlong and Enel so early on in his adventure. The fruit essentially acted as Luffy's gateway to becoming a pirate captain who could survive long enough to organize his crew and, one day, even reach the One Piece treasure, but there's a lot more to it than just that.
In the Wano arc, it is revealed that Luffy's fruit actually channels the power of the sun god Nikka; a figure who is known as a symbol of liberation across the world. As a result, Luffy has actually become seen as a figure of hope and freedom in the eyes of the people he has met along his adventure, which certainly wasn't the case when he was chilling out on a boat with Koby back in Romance Dawn.
Op Op Fruit
Law Has Saved His, And Countless Other Lives, With His Creative Devil Fruit
- User: Law
- Type: Paramecia
As a child, Law was affected by the Amber Lead Disease, which was considered to be completely incurable. Despite Corazon's efforts to restore the boy back to full health, in the end, all the undercover Marine could do was hand him a Devil Fruit in the hopes that it could help cure his condition, and the good news is, it worked. While the Opi Opi fruit is often considered to be one of the most complex Devil Fruits in the series, at a very basic level, it allows the user to deconstruct anything within their close proximity.
At a young age, Law was able to use this ability to remove the disease from his own body. Not only that, it would also enable him to become a doctor, considering it made performing surgeries much more straightforward, allowing him to then go on to form his own rag-tag crew of loyal pirates. While Law probably wouldn't be a pirate without this fruit, he wouldn't even be around in the story at all, highlighting just how important it has been to his personal journey.
Revive Revive Fruit
Brook's Fruit Has Given Him A Second Chance To Reach His Dreams
- User: Brook
- Type: Paramecia
While the world of One Piece is packed full of many different and unique races, living and breathing skeletons aren't exactly a common site. Brook, however, is able to assume a skeletal form due to the power of his Revive Revive fruit, which eventually returned to his body and revived him after he died along with the rest of his crew. While Brook would therefore be there to sing to his crewmates in their final moments, he would be lucky enough to get a second wind after his fruit revived him, though by that point, his skin had completely decayed, leaving only a skeleton and an afro.
While he was initially stranded on the spooky Thriller Bark for quite a while after being resurrected, he was eventually inducted into the Straw Hat crew, where he has remained a loyal ally to Luffy and the others ever since. It goes without saying, but being brought back to life out of nowhere, and given a second-chance to achieve a personal dream, is certainly a life-changing experience, and it's a prime example of just how absurdly useful a Devil Fruit ability can truly be in practice, even if the user is unaware of how it fully works.
