It's no secret that Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece, enjoys getting pretty creative when coming up with Devil Fruit abilities. On some occasions, however, it's gotten to the point where these immensely powerful techniques can be so outlandish and weird, they end up being pretty difficult for fans to wrap their heads around, with there being quite a few that still make barely any sense, even after hundreds of chapters and episodes.

One Piece: 8 Most Selfless Devil Fruits, Ranked

Rather than enhancing the user, these Devil Fruits in One Piece are designed to help out others in times of crisis.

This isn't to suggest that these Devil Fruit abilities are bad in practice, though. In fact, many of them gain an advantage in combat precisely because of how unpredictable they are, and from a fan perspective, it only makes them all the more fascinating to actually learn about. Considering how long One Piece is, it makes sense that, inevitably, at least a few Devil Fruits would show up that are difficult to figure out, with the abilities below being the biggest examples of this.

7 Millet Millet Fruit

A Bulks Of Kaido's Army Became Brainwashed By...Small Balls Of Dango?

  • User: Tama
  • Type: Paramecia

While Tama is one of the very first characters that Luffy meets upon entering Wano, she wouldn't initially be considered very important to the overall plot, considering she's only a child who is clearly not prepared to fight back against Kaido's Beast Pirates. That's what most fans were led to believe, at least for a while, as Tama eventually becomes one of the most crucial assets to the pirate and samurai alliance thanks to her Devil Fruits, which allow her to pinch her cheeks to create small balls of dango.

Miraculously, these balls were enough to completely brainwash any animals who had consumed them, which included the Gifters, since these pirates had already come to acquire animalistic tendencies due to eating SMILE fruits. The fact Tama was able to turn a bulk of Kaido's crew against him was just a little too outlandish for many fans to get on board with, resulting in what could have been a fairly forgettable Devil Fruit becoming one that is so powerful that it barely makes any sense.

6 Dark Dark Fruit

There's Clearly A Lot More To This Devastating Devil Fruit Than Meets The Eye

  • User: Blackbeard
  • Type: Logia

The Dark Dark fruit may be classed as a Logia type fruit, yet it feels like it should be in its own category entirely, considering it doesn't exactly follow the same rules as many of the other fruits in the class. For one, while Blackbeard can manipulate and control darkness when in combat, he cannot make his body completely intangible, unlike the other Logia users. Instead, Blackbeard describes the ability as more of a black hole, which will draw in anything that comes near it, meaning that physical attacks will deal a lot more damage to the user than they would normally.

One Piece: 5 Most Overrated Devil Fruits

Some One Piece Devil Fruits are not nearly as good as one may initially perceive them to be. Here are the most overrated ones of the bunch.

This is also the only known Devil Fruit ability that can negate other people from using their own when in battle. Needless to say, this Devil Fruit has a bunch of special properties that have shrouded it in a dark cloud of mystery ever since it was first introduced. Having a fruit that works this way, yet is still classed as a Logia, feels a little strange given that it really doesn't belong there, so it'll be interesting to see if the future arcs can expand on this ability to make a little more sense of it.

5 Door Door Fruit

Doors That Allow Blueno To Essentially Teleport

  • User: Blueno
  • Type: Paramecia

If Blueno possessed the ability to create a door on any surface that he touches, this would be seen as a pretty tame ability in the grand scheme of things, but the fruit goes much further than just that. Blueno is able to essentially teleport himself by creating doors out of thin air, making it by far one of the most bizarre and nonsensical Devil Fruits in the entire series.

One Piece has never been a series that has been grounded in reality, but seeing Blueno walking out of a door that randomly spawns in the middle of an island does require fans to suspend their disbelief a little more than usual. It's implied that Blueno actually enters a pocket dimension of sorts when moving between each of his doors, and while this does begin to explain how the fruit actually works in practice, it's still one that is difficult to wrap your head around.

4 Isle Isle Fruit

A Humanoid Island Is One Of The Most Bizarre Sights In The Series

  • User: Pizarro
  • Type: Paramecia

Blackbeard's crew has collected some pretty weird Devil Fruits so far in the story, but by far the most bizarre and nonsensical of the bunch is the Isle Isle fruit, currently owned by Pizarro. When activating this ability, Pizarro was able to fuse himself with an entire island, which is already strange enough as it is, but it doesn't stop there. Pizarro can also somehow create his own limbs from the island itself after he has transformed, as was shown when he almost crushed Garp's ship during the Egghead Island arc.

Not only that, he's also somehow able to actually speak to his opponents, despite having literally no way of doing so since he's not in his original body. Because this fruit was introduced to the story fairly recently, it seems likely Oda will expand on it a lot more in the future, which he definitely should do, considering how many questions fans still have concerning the ability.

3 Hobby Hobby Fruit

A Fruit Ability That's So Powerful, It's Hard To Comprehend

  • User: Sugar
  • Type: Paramecia

There are plenty of absurdly powerful Devil Fruits that have been introduced to the One Piece story, but the Hobby Hobby fruit, owned by Sugar, is one that is so strong that it's honestly hard to even understand how it could be this devastating in the first place. The way it works is, Sugar is able to turn anyone she touches into a toy, which will then erase them from other people's memories, essentially removing their existence from the world almost entirely.

One Piece: 7 Worst Things About Eating A Devil Fruit

From being ostracized to losing the ability to touch the sea forever, here are some of the worst things about eating a devil fruit

20

Considering the rest of the Doflamingo family have strong Devil Fruits already, this one stands out for being a god-like ability, which seems far too powerful for the person using it. This fruit also comes with the rather unusual side effect of preventing the host from aging, which is why Sugar looks like a child despite being in her 20s. It just doesn't seem to make all that sense why a fruit, which could easily be considered one of the strongest in the series, was randomly dropped in the middle of a story arc for only a few episodes and chapters, making it one that still sparks many online discussions and debates even to this day.

2 Wash Wash Fruit

What Sorts Of Effects Does This Fruit Have On Pirates Once They've Been Freshly Cleaned?

  • User: Tsuru
  • Type: Paramecia

Admittedly, the Wash Wash fruit has only been shown once or twice throughout the entire series, but that's a big reason why the ability itself still makes barely any sense, since it simply hasn't been explored in enough depth. At a basic level, this Devil Fruit enables Tsuru to fold her enemies like a pile of wet laundry, before then putting them up on a washing line to dry off, but how exactly this affects the target is largely unknown.

For example, some have theorized that it's more of a supportive ability, considering it could help out a few Marines who are all hot and sweaty from a mission. However, Oda himself has also suggested that it could be used in a way to clean a pirate's heart, though how exactly that would work remains a mystery. Hopefully, this Devil Fruit will appear again in the future to give fans a clearer idea of what exactly it actually does in practice, because as of right now, fans can only guess the ways in which it can be utilized.

1 Op Op Fruit

The Most Unpredictable And Random Fruit In The Entire Series

  • User: Law
  • Type: Paramecia

When the Op Op fruit was first introduced back in Sabaody, while it was clearly a little more complex than most abilities, it at least seemed as though Oda had a decent idea of how it would work. As the story has gone on, though, it's become so unpredictable and random that not even the author himself can clearly describe it, as it really does feel like Law is able to unveil a new technique or ability whenever he wants to, without any restrictions holding him back.

For example, not only can Law teleport himself and anyone around him, he's also able to switch around people's bodies, create a soundproof barrier, and even kill someone by destroying their organs with a weapon known as a Gamma Knife. In fact, many fans have simply given up trying to figure out how far this fruit can actually go in terms of its underlying power, since there is literally no way to predict what Law is going to whip out next for his latest battle.
