In the world of One Piece, people usually eat Devil Fruits to gain some sort of offensive ability, like being able to generate a natural element, turning their body into a specific substance, transforming into a deadly animal, etc. However, it’s also very important to remember that many other Devil Fruits give their users impressive defensive abilities instead.
After all, this story takes place in a very dangerous world that’s filled to the brim with powerful combatants, so it’s important for the characters living in it to have solid defenses to protect themselves, whether they are pirates or marines. Of course, there are many Devil Fruits in One Piece that are perfect for defense, but the following eight are the most notorious examples so far.
Gomu Gomu No Mi (Hito Hito No Mi, Model: Nika)
Makes Its User Immune To Blunt Attacks
- Eaten by: Monkey D. Luffy
- Type: Mythical Zoan (Previously classified as a Paramecia)
- Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga) Episode 1 (Anime)
While Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi is well-known for its impressive rubber-based abilities and its over-the-top attacks, one of the many reasons this is such a great Devil Fruit to eat is the fact it gives its user both offensive and defensive abilities. Luffy can not only stretch his body to an absurd degree, but he’s also completely immune to any blunt attacks (as long as his opponents are not using Haki, of course).
Throughout the story, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates has taken many strong attacks without suffering any damage, not to mention that he’s also able to bounce back any bullets or cannonballs that the marines shoot at him. And if all that wasn’t enough, since his body is made of rubber, Luffy is immune to electricity, which proved to be a crucial immunity in his battles against powerhouses like Enel and Big Mom.
Bara Bara No Mi
Makes Its User Immune To Slashing Attacks
- Eaten by: Buggy
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Chapter 9 (Manga) Episode 5 (Anime)
On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, there’s Buggy the Clown’s Bara Bara no Mi, which gives him the only resistance the Gomu Gomu no Mi lacks: immunity to slashing attacks. At first glance, this may seem like a creepy and/or absurd Devil Fruit, seeing as it allows its user to split his body and manipulate the pieces from a distance, but this has proven to be especially useful in a world that’s full of people who choose to wield blades in combat.
With his immunity to slashing attacks, Buggy has been able to confront skilled sword fighters like Roronoa Zoro and Dracule Mihawk and come out completely unharmed. And while he’s not impervious to blunt attacks, at least he’s able to literally pick up his own pieces and reform his body after getting hit by a devastating finishing move, which is something that not many One Piece characters can do.
Nikyu Nikyu No Mi
Can Repel Any Attack Directed At Its User
- Eaten by: Bartholomew Kuma
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Chapter 473 (Manga) Episode 368 (Anime)
There’s no denying that the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi is one of the strangest and most distinct Devil Fruits in One Piece, seeing as the paw pads that it grew on Kuma’s palms can repel almost anything, both physical and abstract elements. While he can obviously use this ability to generate bombs of repulsive power and even make anybody he touches travel to another location, it also has impeccable defensive properties.
Kuma can quickly repel any attack directed at him with his paws, as it was seen when he blocked powerful techniques from Roronoa Zoro and Monkey D. Luffy. Additionally, the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi has some minor healing abilities, since it allows him to extract any physical damage that was made to his or somebody else’s body.
Kira Kira No Mi
Covers Its User’s Body In Diamond
- Eaten by: Jozu
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Chapter 553 (Manga) Episode 463 (Anime)
It’s simply not possible to become one of the strongest combatants of the Whitebeard Pirates without an exceptional Devil Fruit, and this sentiment is perfectly reflected by Jozu and his Kira Kira no Mi. This Paramecia allows its user to turn parts of their body into diamond, which naturally grants it incredible defensive properties.
The only drawback of the Kira Kira no Mi is the fact that Jozu can’t move the parts of his body that he turned into diamond, but he has enough experience with this ability to make great use of it, both for offense and defense. With his almost impenetrable diamond armor, Jozu was able to withstand attacks from multiple strong opponents during the Summit War of Marineford, like Crocodile, Mihawk, and Doflamingo.
Kame Kame No Mi
Gives Its User A Durable Turtle Shell
- Eaten by: Pekoms
- Type: Zoan
- Debut: Chapter 652 (Manga) Episode 572 (Anime)
Not many Zoan Devil Fruits in the series have particularly remarkable defensive capabilities, unless they’re based on a durable animal, and Pekoms’ Kame Kame no Mi is one of the most obvious examples. Most fans have most likely already forgotten that the Mink combatant of the Big Mom Pirates has eaten this Devil Fruit, but he as actually used it effectively on more than one occasion.
The Kame Kame no Mi allows Pekoms to transform into a turtle at will, with the animal’s durable shell being the most important part of this seemingly mundane transformation. By quickly turning his back into a turtle shell, he was able to block point-black gunshots from Caribou and Capone “Gang” Bege, not to mention that he also fell into shark-infested waters from a high altitude and came out of them mostly unharmed.
Bari Bari No Mi
Allows Its User To Generate Unbreakable Barriers
- Eaten by: Bartolomeo and Kurozumi Semimaru
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Chapter 708 (Manga) Episode 637 (Anime)
When it comes to Devil Fruits that are perfect for defense, there’s arguably no better choice than the Bari Bari no Mi, which allows its user to generate barriers that are almost impossible to break or pierce. Bartolomeo was the first person who used this power on-screen, and it certainly left a huge impression on the audience, seeing as his barriers were able to withstand attacks from strong characters like Hack, Dellinger, Bellamy, and Elizabello II, who couldn’t even put a dent in them with his devastating King Punch.
A flashback sequence revealed that Kurozumi Semimaru was one of the Bari Bari no Mi’s previous users, and his barriers effortlessly blocked sword slashes from Kouzuki Oden, who was one of the most powerful sword fighters in all of Wano. On top of all that, the user can also change the shape and size of their barriers at will, further broadening the defensive capabilities of the Bari Bari no Mi in the process.
Ishi Ishi No Mi
Allows Its User To Merge With Solid Stone
- Eaten by: Pica
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Chapter 736 (Manga) Episode 669 (Anime)
With the powers of the Ishi Ishi no Mi, Pica of the Donquixote Pirates can merge with any stone in his surroundings. Not only was he able to turn himself into a living castle, but he later used this impressive ability to transform into a massive, walking mountain that terrorized the streets of Dressrosa.
The Ishi Ishi no Mi is surprisingly versatile and useful in terms of offense and defense, and Pica’s gigantic transformation proved to be quite a challenging obstacle for the Straw Hats and their allies during the Dressrosa Arc. The only person who was able to destroy his stone armor was Zoro, and he was only able to do it by using one of his strongest techniques (which required some assistance from Orlumbus).
Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu
Gives Its User Sturdy Dragon Scales
- Eaten by: Kaido
- Type: Mythical Zoan
- Debut: Chapter 921 (Manga) Episode 921 (Anime)
In many ways, the Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu is like the perfect Devil Fruit for combat: not only it allows its user, Kaido, to transform into a massive Azure Dragon that can fly, breathe fire, generate Flame Clouds and manipulate the weather, but he can also wield the enhanced physical strength of said creature.
But if all that wasn’t enough, Kaido also has extreme durability, since the dragon scales that cover his body in both his Hybrid and Beast forms are incredibly tough and make him invulnerable to almost any attack that’s directed at him. Capable fighters like Oden, the Nine Red Scabbards, Kid, Law, Yamato, Zoro and Luffy unleashed some of their most powerful techniques on him, and he suffered almost no visible damage from them: only users of Conqueror’s Haki were able to harm him. It’s also worth pointing out that Kaido’s human body is seemingly quite durable in and of itself, but the Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu most likely increased his durability even further.
