Eiichiro Oda's One Piece is known to shy away from killing off too many characters, but that certainly doesn't mean Oda doesn't do it every now and then. In Marineford, Portgas D. Ace had one of the most tragic deaths in all of One Piece. He died after a heroic attempt to protect his brother, Luffy. With deaths come revenge plotlines, and fans know that one already exists for Luffy and Akainu due to Ace’s death. More recently, however, Oda set up an even bigger revenge plotline, and it has to do with Blackbeard and his father, Rocks D. Xebec.
One Piece: Oda Sets Up The Next King Of The World After Imu
Imu is the current ruler of the One Piece world, but his throne will be taken over by this character.
Blackbeard was a huge mystery for most of the One Piece series, but his background is finally getting explored with the God Valley Incident. Blackbeard’s father, Rocks D. Xebec, was snatched away from him in God Valley. He was Domi Reversi’d by Imu, and forced to kill his own family. Rocks died in a humiliating manner on God Valley after Roger and Garp killed him at his own request. Now, more tragedy might befall Blackbeard, and it all has to do with one person, the King of the World, Imu. Imu will eventually face the wrath of Blackbeard’s revenge as he avenges his massacred clan, his father Rocks, and even his mother Eris, and retakes his family’s long-lost throne.

God Valley is nearing its end in One Piece. This particular segment of the Loki flashback has been intense, and it featured a ton of interesting new lore, especially concerning Blackbeard and Shanks. Through Rocks D. Xebec, fans came to learn more information about the One Piece world, especially concerning the Void Century. Eiichiro Oda finally revealed the lineage of Rocks D. Xebec in God Valley, and in turn, that of Blackbeard. Their ancestor is none other than Davy D. Jones, a man who used to rule the world before Imu came and took his place.
Ever since usurping Jones, Imu has been hunting down the remaining individuals of the Davy Clan. Every one of them, apart from Blackbeard and Eris, was killed on God Valley. Rocks D. Xebec’s death was especially tragic as he was turned into a slave demon and asked to kill his own family. Luckily, he was eliminated by Garp and Roger upon his own request.
After 23 Years, One Piece Author Oda Finally Reveals Blackbeard’s True Goal

All of this was especially traumatic for Blackbeard, and it might not even be the end of his tragedy as his mother might also meet a bad end in the flashback very soon. This dark past of Blackbeard essentially sets Blackbeard up to turn his wrath towards one person, and that's Imu. Imu stripped everything from a young Teach, and that includes his clan, his father, and even his mother.
It's no wonder that Blackbeard has been scheming for all these years, and his goal is clear. He will get his revenge against Imu and reclaim his family’s throne. It looks like Oda has already set up One Piece’s biggest revenge in this Blackbeard plotline.
Blackbeard Might Kill Imu to Avenge His Family
Blackbeard wants to take down Imu for multiple reasons. However, one thing is for sure, he can’t achieve that with just his crew alone. As revealed by Rocks D. Xebec, one needs two Devil Fruits to take down the World Government. Presumably, they're the Yami Yami no Mi, which Blackbeard already has, and the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which is currently with Luffy.
In other words, to fulfill his revenge, Blackbeard will have to attack Imu when Luffy does. Two enemies will have to work hand in hand to defeat the biggest evil in the One Piece world, Imu.
