Summary

  • The Whitebeard Pirates were a strong crew led by Edward Newgate, divided into factions and powered by rare Devil Fruits.
  • Gura Gura no Mi creates tremors, Marco's Phoenix Fruit heals, and Ace's fire powers were nullified by Blackbeard.
  • Jozu's diamond body defends against attacks, Toki's time fruit sends people forward, and Blamenco stores objects in a pocket dimension.

The Whitebeard Pirates were one of the strongest crews in One Piece. Their captain, Edward Newgate, was an orphan desiring companionship, and viewed his crewmates as his own children. He accumulated a number of affiliate crews, and even enough pirates in his main crew to make splitting them up into divisions a necessity. Another aspect that added to their power was the Devil Fruits that certain crew members obtained. A handful of the highest ranked pirates in the crew have consumed some of the most powerful and rare Devil Fruits in the series. However, between fatalities during the Summit War and the subsequently more definitive loss the Whitebeard Pirates suffered during the Payback War, the extent to which each Devil Fruit is connected to the crew has differed.

Whitebeard's Tremor Fruit Activated In Marineford In One Piece
Whitebeard Creating Quakes

The Gura Gura no Mi is widely considered to be the most powerful Paramecia Devil Fruit. The user becomes a Tremor Human, capable of causing massive shockwaves which can travel through most mediums. This is commonly used by those who wield its powers to create earthquakes by sending shockwaves to the ground. This Devil Fruit formerly belonged to Newgate himself, but he was killed during the Summit War at Marineford.

One Piece: 5 Mysteries Of Blackbeard

Despite his frequent appearances in the series, Blackbeard is still shrounded in mystery, leaving fans with more questions than answers about him.

His Devil Fruit was subsequently stolen by his former crewmate, Marshall D. Teach, who used a means unknown to obtain it right after the elder pirate's death. It is now used in tandem with the Yami Yami no Mi, Blackbeard's own Devil Fruit which he stole from a former commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, making him the only known user of two Devil Fruits simultaneously. The user can channel shockwaves through their palms, though Whitebeard also appeared to, at times, use his naginata, Murakumogiri, to channel these shockwaves as well.

5 Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix

Marco's Devil Fruit

Marco the Phoenix One Piece

The Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix is one of the rarest Devil Fruits ever, belonging to the Mythical Zoan subset, which allows its user to transform into a mythical creature. In First Division Commander, Marco's case, this creature is a phoenix. Marco uses his Devil Fruit to attack, but also to heal, as the phoenix flames have regenerative properties. He can heal himself from most fatal attacks and also heal others. When fully transformed into a phoenix, Marco can effectively evade most attacks in a manner akin to a Logia user.

The Devil Fruit has limitations, but they have yet to be fully explored indepth. Marco currently resides in Sphinx, the island formerly inhabited by Whitebeard as an orphan. There, he uses his Devil Fruit as a doctor to heal the locals, but also as a protector of his former captain's home.

4 Mera Mera no Mi

Formerly Ace's Devil Fruit

Portgas D. Ace From One Piece

The Mera Mera no Mi is a Logia fruit, the rarest and most powerful of the three base variants of Devil Fruit. It allows its user to become, control, and create fire. Second Division Commander, Portgas D. Ace could effectively maneuver this power, so those without haki were incapable of even damaging him in the majority of cases. Ace's Devil Fruit powers made him largely unbeatable, up until he was defeated by Blackbeard, who nullified them with his own Devil Fruit, which was also a Logia.

After that, Ace was imprisoned in Impel Down, until Luffy organized a prison break to free him. Unfortunately, Ace's freedom was short-lived, as he perished in the Summit War. He was killed by the Marine Admiral, Akainu, who used the Magu Magu no Mi, an even stronger Logia, to burn him fatally with superior heat.

These devil fruits have known past users in One Piece.

By

After Ace's death, Donquixote Doflamingo came into possession of the Mera Mera no Mi, attempting to use it to bait out Luffy. Although many gladiators fought for the clamored Logia fruit, it was ultimately consumed by Sabo, the right-hand of the revolutionary army, as well as the sworn brother of Luffy and Ace. Sabo channels the Devil Fruit through a metal pipe he wields as well as his physical being.

3 Kira Kira no Mi

Jozu's Devil Fruit

One Piece Jozu Kira Kira no Mi Diamond Devil Fruit, Whitebeard Pirates
Kira Kira no Mi

This Paramecia Devil Fruit allows the user to transform part of their body into a diamond. The Kira Kira no Mi was eaten by the Whitebeard Pirates Third Division Commander, Jozu. This Devil Fruit provides an incredible amount of defense, as even Dracule Mihawk, the World's Strongest Swordsman, cannot slash through Jozu's diamond body, with Jozu not even sustaining visible damage from his attack. However, there is a tradeoff; any part of the user's body turned diamond is immobilized whilst in the transformed state.

Jozu's current status has not been elaborated upon since the Payback War, so it can be assumed for the time being that he is currently in hiding and is thus still alive and in possession of the Devil Fruit.

2 Toki Toki no Mi

Formerly Toki's Devil Fruit

One Piece Kozuki Oden And Amatsuki Toki

The legend Kozuki Oden's wife was a time traveler, who used her Devil Fruit, the Toki Toki no Mi, to continually move forward in time. This Paramecia fruit allowed her to live in many different time periods, traveling into the future once a threat made itself known. After traveling into the future and meeting Oden, she chose to join him as a member of the Whitebeard Pirates and later the Roger Pirates until she fell ill. Since she chose to stay in Oden's time period for the rest of their lives, one can surmise it remained largely unused during her time on either crew.

The Devil Fruit could also send others forward in time, as Toki used it to send her son Momonosuke, as well as four of Wano's Nine Red Scabbards, into the future, so they would survive the Beasts Pirates' siege of Wano Country. As Toki was killed in the same incident, her Devil Fruit has subsequently returned to circulation. Its current user, if one even exists, is unknown.

1 Poke Poke no Mi

Blamenco's Devil Fruit

Blamenco takes out a weapon

The Sixth Division Commander, Blamenco, is one of the lesser-known Whitebeard Pirates to have eaten a Devil Fruit. His Paramecia Devil Fruit powers allow his body to have a large storage capacity. Blamenco is shown using this hammerspace to store a gigantic mallet, much larger than himself, inside his right chin pocket. This mallet became his weapon for dealing with marines during the Summit War.

Like the majority of Whitebeard Pirates, Blamenco has been unseen since the Payback War, implying he still may be alive and thus in possession of it. Curiously, Oda stated Usopp would have this Devil Fruit if he was allowed one. Seeing as Usopp already possesses a large variety of weapons, the appeal this kind of fruit would have for him is understandable.
