As the shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates, Franky's main role is maintaining the Thousand Sunny and making sure she isn't damaged. However, his eccentric personality and love of building have driven him to invent many new things. When he was young, this was limited to battleships and other means of naval warfare, but now he focuses on creating tools and devices that will help the crew.
One Piece: Every Race Depicted In The Elbaf Ancient Mural
From the Longarm Tribe to the Ancient Giants, here are some of the races depicted in the Ancient Mural of Elbaf in One Piece.
Unlike a normal shipwright, Franky also dabbles in robotics and advanced technology, using his knowledge of both to upgrade his body. Since joining the Straw Hats, Franky's inventions have helped them escape danger many times over, and after studying on Karakura Island for two years, they've become even more useful.
9 Battle Franky: Battleships
Franky's Original Navy Battalion
Before he changed his name to Franky, he was known as Cutty Flam. Working under Tom, the famous shipwright, he spent his spare time developing a series of warships fitted with different kinds of weapons. These ships were all named "Battle Franky" with a number associated with when it was built, and together, there were 35 iterations.
These ships were only as big as lifeboats, but they had plenty of firepower to make up for their size. Armed with cannons and turrets, these ships were originally built to hunt Sea Kings, but the only one to succeed in that mission was BF-35. None of these boats exist anymore, as they were destroyed by CP5 during their scheme to frame Tom and his crew.
8 Mini Merry II
A Legacy Reborn
Leaving the Going Merry behind was tough on the entire crew, and seeing that, Franky made sure that a piece of their old friend could continue on their adventure. The Mini Merry is part of the Thousand Sunny's Soldier Docking System, which houses smaller vessels that are used for various things, and its primary use is as a shopping boat.
For the most part, the Mini Merry is just a regular boat, but it actually has a steam engine attached to it that powers the paddle wheels on either side. The boat can also be used for excursions with smaller groups, as seen in Thriller Bark and Punk Hazard. While it may not seem extraordinary compared to his other inventions, the Mini Merry is a gift loved by the entire crew.
7 Shark Submerge III
Underwater Travel Option
Shark Submerge III is another addition to the Sunny's Soldier Docking System created by Franky. It's a three-man submarine shaped like a shark used for underwater exploration and inconspicuous travel. It can dive to a limit of 5,000 meters and has a transponder snail capable of communicating with the Sunny.
10 Biggest Hypocrites In One Piece, Ranked
These One Piece characters exhibit notable hypocrisy, acting in ways that starkly contrast with their professed beliefs or roles.
As a story about pirates, One Piece is full of different types of ships, but submarines are quite rare. Excluding games and movies, there are only four vessels that can dive underwater in the One Piece world, including Shark Submerge. The others are all full-scale ships, so it's rather impressive that Franky was able to create something smaller that could handle the underwater pressure.
6 Kurosai FR-U IV
A Stylish New Motorcycle
After studying on Karakuri Island for two years, Franky made a few additions to the Soldier Docking System, and Kurosai was one of them. The Kurosai FR-U is a three-wheel motorcycle adorned with Franky's signature star and a metal head in the shape of a rhinoceros horn. It's incredibly sturdy, and with enough momentum, it's capable of toppling opponents like Big Mom.
When it comes to land travel, the Straw Hats are pretty limited, but Franky's new equipment has at least given the crew options, even if only a few people can make use of them. Of course, Kurosai's best feature is the ability to "dock," helping to create the General Franky. It's made of Wapometal, which is a memory-shape alloy that can be restored to its previous shape.
5 Brachio Tank V
Heavy Duty Artillery
As the final addition to the Sunny's Soldier Docking System, the Brachio Tank is just as the name implies, a tank that can fire explosive rounds. This vehicle has a large, round body and moves using rotating tread belts. The gun of the tank is shaped like a brachiosaurus's head and even has a little face, using the barrel as its mouth. The shells it fires can easily disperse crowds and defeat normal enemies.
The Brachio Tank is also capable of "docking" since it's made of Wapometal, which can return to a preconfigured shape. As the bottom of the General Franky, it's also capable of sprouting mechanical legs out of its back and running on two legs. It's relatively slow, but it makes up for its speed with increased firepower.
4 BF-38: General Franky
The Ultimate Dream
After two years of researching Vegapunk's technology, Franky's childhood dreams and aspirations culminated in the Iron Pirate General Franky, a combination mech made of Kurosai FR-U and the Brachio Tank. Using the tank as the torso and legs and the motorcycle as the arms, Franky can pilot a giant, metal robot, allowing him to access stronger attacks and higher firepower.
8 One Piece Characters Who Rely On Their Brains And Not Their Brawn
Several characters in One Piece distinguish themselves by relying more on intellect and strategy than sheer physical strength.
During its debut on Fish-Man Island, most of its attacks were gags since they came from Franky himself. It wasn't until Punk Hazard that General Franky's real power was revealed. It was capable of doing many of Franky's original attacks but upscaled and with much more power, and in Wano, it also had a giant katana to use in combat.
3 Cola Engine
The Power Or Cartoon Innovation
Because of their flashy and explosive nature, many of Franky's other inventions get more screen time and spotlight, but one of his most innovative creations is the Cola engine and Cola energy in general. Many energy sources have been seen in One Piece, and Cola is by far the most creative and interesting. By shaking barrels of Cola, Franky can capture the carbonation energy to power machines and devices.
Franky uses Cola to power his own body as well as various functions on the Thousand Sunny, including motorized rudders, Coup de Bursts, and Sunny's Gaon Cannon. Not much is said about it in the anime or manga, but it's a relatively safe energy source that's powerful enough to make an entire ship fly.
2 Thousand Sunny
The Best Ship In The World
Like the other Straw Hats, Franky has a dream that motivated him to join Luffy's crew. He wanted to build a ship that could circumnavigate the entire world, which is what he hopes to achieve with the Thousand Sunny. Made out of the incredibly durable Adam Wood, the Sunny is Franky's greatest achievement as a shipwright, and it's one of the most highly advanced ships in the series.
Running on a Cola engine, the Sunny is capable of firing a laser cannon and flying with a Coup de Burst. It has several amenities that would be considered luxuries while sailing across the world, like heated showers, automatic rudders, an advanced kitchen, and much more. It's big enough for all ten members to live and cohabitate comfortably.
1 BF-36/37: Cyborg Body
The Latest Battle Franky Model
Franky's biggest achievement in terms of inventions is his own body by far. Although he had little experience in surgery and body modification, Franky was able to save himself from the brink of death by using salvaged ship parts to reconstruct his body. He successfully made himself into a living weapon capable of defeating members of the elite CP9.
One Piece: 7 Things You Should About Bartholomew Kuma And His Past
Bartholomew Kuma is one of the most mysterious characters in One Piece.
After upgrading himself for two years on Karakuri Island, Franky made his body much more durable and added many more enhancements, providing himself with many more options to transform his body. He's able to fire laser beams and missiles to cause more damage, and he has many more tools at his disposal to dispatch enemies. Of course, the most impressive aspect of his cyborg body is that it runs purely on Cola.
