Garp Fought Many Legendary Pirates
Monkey D. Garp joined the Marines many years ago, and it didn't take long for him to rise through the ranks. He became a Vice Admiral in next to no time but stopped accepting any more promotions afterward because he didn't want to serve directly under the Celestial Dragons.
Garp did not have a Devil Fruit, but that didn't make a difference to his strength. He trained regularly, which improved his physical strength to the point where he could shatter giant boulders with mere punches. Garp's Haki was also extremely potent and easily among the strongest in the series.
It has been stated that he and Sengoku were the only two Marines capable of challenging Gol D. Roger and the other elite pirates. In fact, Garp clashed multiple times with Roger, and they came close to killing each other. After so many intense encounters, Roger and Garp started to respect each other. Roger even told Garp about his unborn child because he trusted him that much. Given his feats, it's quite apparent that Garp is the greatest Marine of all time, but he's been surpassed by Akainu.

Akainu is the current Fleet Admiral of the Marines. He fought against Kuzan for several days and, ultimately, emerged as the winner, resulting in him being named the Fleet Admiral. Akainu is a firm believer in Absolute Justice, and he doesn't believe in a gray area. The Fleet Admiral is notorious for carrying out justice no matter the consequences. Akainu has no qualms about killing innocent people if they try to get in his way.

His ruthlessness also grants him a distinct advantage in fights, as he goes all out from the get-go. For example, Kaido gives his opponents some time to show what they're made of. On the other hand, Akainu doesn't hold back. He doesn't give his rivals even an inch to operate.
Akainu Possesses One Of The Strongest Devil Fruits In One Piece
Akainu ate the Magu Magu no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit, which is considered special even among the class. The Devil Fruit has incredibly high offensive power, and there are only a handful of others that can compete with it. The Magu Magu no Mi allows Akainu to create and control magma at will. Considering magma is one of the most dangerous occurring elements in nature, it's easy to see why the Devil Fruit is so destructive.
Aside from the Magu Magu no Mi, Akainu also has access to at least two types of Haki and has outstanding control over them. It is unconfirmed whether Akainu has Conqueror's Haki, but there is a good chance that he does. After all, he is at the very top of the Marines. Considering none of the current Admirals and the lower-ranked Marines have Conqueror's Haki, it would be bizarre if the Fleet Admiral didn't have it either. Hopefully, Oda will reveal more details about Akainu in the coming arcs.

Akainu will unquestionably have a big role to play in the Final Saga. He will be one of the last villains that will need to be overthrown in order to change the world. Many fans believe that Luffy will fight Akainu, as the latter is responsible for Ace's death. However, it is more rational for Sabo to take down Akainu. Sabo feels a great deal of remorse for not being able to help Ace and Luffy in Marineford. By beating Ace's killer, Sabo would avenge his fallen brother.
