This article contains spoilers for the Elbaf arc of One Piece.

Despite only officially being in the franchise for 6 chapters at the time of writing, Rocks D. Xebec has quickly shot up the rankings as one of the best One Piece characters that Eiichiro Oda has ever created. The legend surrounding this man always implied that he was incredibly evil, and while this is true to some extent, the truth of the matter is that he is one of the most complex and layered characters in the series.

Even long before his introduction, fans were convinced that there was far more to him than could be seen at first glance, prompting a ton of amazing theories. However, even among them, there was a specific one that tied him to one of the most elusive and mythical characters in One Piece, and Chapter 1159 has finally confirmed this. So, let's take a look at the truth of Xebec and Teach's lineage.

Davy Jones was first mentioned in the story arc that everyone once considered to be the most skippable, but now agree that it was actually incredibly important all along: Long Ring Long Land. Here, he was explained as a mythical being said to be cursed to roam the ocean floor, so fans didn't have much reason to believe otherwise, since this whole thing was framed as a sailor's tale, backed by Oda's hilarious drawing of the character in an SBS.

However, Chapter 1154 blew all speculation out of the water as it finally gave more context to Xebec and revealed that he once broke into Imu's Chamber of Flowers. In his confrontation with the ruler of the world, he proclaimed to be an admirer of Davy Jones, sending fans back into a frenzy of theorization to create the best possible explanations about what this could mean. One of the most prevalent of these theories claimed that Davy Jones was a legendary pirate who may have also belonged to the D. Clan and had a special relationship to Xebec in particular.

I've got a hidden name. It's Davy D. Xebec. I reckon the World Government has been trying to erase this specific name for a long time. It's tied to the lineage of the legendary pirate, Davy D. Jones.

This theory was confirmed in Chapter 1159, where Xebec revealed to Harald that the 'Rocks' family name, which he was infamous around the world for, was merely a front, and that his true name was Davy D. Xebec. Moreover, he explained that the name was derived from the legendary pirate known as Davy D. Jones, and the clan that had sprouted from this had a reasonable amount of sway in the underworld despite being almost entirely wiped out due to being the target of the Celestial Dragons.

This changes everything, since Xebec and Teach have now been confirmed as being even more important to the overall world than they have ever been before, and that they have direct familial ties to one of the most legendary figures in history. Only time will tell the true significance of this reveal and how important Davy D. Jones truly was, but this latest chapter strongly implies that fans have not seen the last of Xebec.

A Great Amount Of Theorization

  • A mythical figure.

At the current moment, details about Davy Jones are incredibly sparse, and much of what is known is shrouded in myth and rumor. When Robin first mentioned him during the Long Ring Long Land arc, he was essentially explained to be a pirate whose greed and infamy were so great that he was cursed to wander the ocean floor for eternity, where many still think he resides to this day.

One of the best theories about Davy Jones is that he was a pirate during Joyboy's time who may have betrayed him. The main reason for this is the 'D.' Initial in his name, which the common belief regarding it states is indicative of him and Joyboy once being related in one way or another, or, at the very least, may have had something to do with one another, as many even believe that the first members of the D. Clan were members of Joyboy's crew. Conversely, and more likely, the theory states that he may have been Joyboy's rival or counterpart.

Final Villain of One Piece

The story of One Piece is all about Inherited Will that lasts throughout the ages and is later born within others over the years who want the same thing as those who came before. This can be seen with Joyboy, Roger, and Luffy. Because of this, there is the role of the dark counterpart that goes with every main pirate of an era, such as Xebec with Roger and Blackbeard with Luffy. If we believe that this came from a sort of inherited role over the centuries, then Joyboy must have also had such a dark counterpart, which fans believe to be Davy D. Jones.

This would be an incredible twist and would even explain the recently-revealed details about the Davy Clan. Judging by how an association with this name still has a lot of pull in the underworld despite them being in hiding, it can be surmised that this specific offshoot of the D. Clan has always had a dark and evil reputation, which stemmed from Davy D. Jones himself. Seeing how Xebec and Blackbeard countered the most important pirates of their eras, it's highly probable that Davy D. Jones did the same for Joyboy during the Void Century.
